The Power of Routines and Habits

Mark Hely says that the most important things that make him so organised are his routines and habits.

A routine is “a sequence of actions regularly followed; a fixed program.

A habit is “an acquired behavior pattern regularly followed until it has become almost involuntary: the habit of looking both ways before crossing the street.”

“What are your routines and habits? How do they help you to be organised?

    Hi everybody,
I have lots of routines to help me be organized. I check my schedule every night to make sure I have done what i have to do and I also check the next day’s schedule so I know what I have to bring to school. When I get home everyday, I set my own schedule of what I have to do until bedtime. I also tidy my work desk everytime I’ve finished working.

Wow… you seem to be quite similar to Mark. Maybe one day you’ll have 500 people working for you too! These are excellent routines to have, Vin.

My most effective habits and routines are: Checking what I packed and tidy my room if it’s messed up.Checking what I packed helps me to be organized because if you don’t check what you’ve packed, maybe you will forget something at home. Also if I tidy my room everyday I will have a clean room everyday.

    • September 5, 2011 at 9:28 pm

It is so nice to have a clean and tidy room isn’t it?

    Hi 6SS,

Checking my school schedule every morning is one of my habits as well as in the evening to make sure I have got homework done for stuff like World Languages. I also check what i have after school every day so that I can make arrangements with my maid’s for what time they should pick me up at.

I need to have a habit for doing my homework so i do not always just leave it till the deadline day witch I do a lot witch gives me quite a lot of stress so I sometimes yell at my sister or just stop working.

    Cheers,

    Billy

    • September 5, 2011 at 9:34 pm

Yes, you should set up a routine for your homework. It sounds like putting it off is having a negative influence on your life and, sadly, affecting your relationship with your sister.

    Hi Mr.Sam,

My most effective habits and routines are:

    1) Unpacking and packing my bag in the afternoon when I get home from school. This helps me because if you pack your bag in the morning, you’re probably bound to forget to pack something.

2)I make sure I’m in bed by 8:30pm – 9:00pm. This is really helpful because when I’m in bed, I read for a while and it also takes me a bit of time to fall asleep. Also, if I sleep at 10:00pm or later, it affects the next day for me because I feel sleepy and won’t be able to concentrate in class.

I like the fact that you describe your bedtime as a routine. There are many studies that show that kids your age need about 10 hours of sleep every night. This will ensure that they get the sleep they need in order to develop physically and mentally. Your bedtime routine is really good for you!

My effective habits and routines are:
I check my tomorrow’s schedule after coming back from school so I know what I have to bring to school. For example if I have PE & Swimming, I have to bring indoor shoe, PE clothes and swimming stuff. If I don’t have PE clothes, I will miss PE. I don’t want to do that.
Reading a book before sleeping on my bed makes me get a good sleep.

    • September 5, 2011 at 9:39 pm

Me too. I love reading just before going to sleep. However, I have got into the habit of working at bedtime and that actually makes it much more difficult for me to sleep.

These are great routines to have, they are the foundation for becoming more organized and more independent.

  9. September 6, 2011 at 5:00 pm

    Hi 6SS,

Routines help you be organize because if you forget to do something like your homework you will get in trouble, but if you make it a habit to do your homework you won’t get in trouble. My routine is to do my homework after I eat food, from school my other routine is also to check my schedule at before i go to bed and in the morning in case I forget anything.

    Hi 6SS,

My routines are going to bed I always check my alarm to see if it will go at the time I want it to go so that I won’t be late for school and my friend which I normally go with has to wait for me. My bedtime routine is also to read for half an hour or 45 minutes so that I can become relaxed and have peace at least once a day. My other routine is to keep my lunch, snack & books. After eating my breakfast I do this so that I can double check if everything is in my bag and that I don’t go on the next light also.

    MY MORNING ROUTINE

First of all I wake up in the morning. Then I take a shower, brush my teeth, put on my clothes, and then I check my bag if I am missing anything. While waiting for my sister every morning I pick my plants of the IPAD that I grew in a game called SMURFS, and then I go downstairs and get my breakfast. After that I eat my breakfast in the car and put on my shoes ready to get in the school. Finally I wait for my friends and then we talk and walk together up to the classroom.
    MY AFTERSCHOOL ROUTINE
Most of the time I will stay afterschool till 3:00 and then when I go home I take a nice shower and pick some plants that I grew in the morning. Then I might relax or do my homework. After I finish my homework I will go down on the first floor to eat dinner with my family. When I come up I’ll continue to do my homework but mostly I just read. Sometimes when I completed all my homework I can just relax or do anything I want. And then I sleep…
AND THEN I REPEAT THE SAME ROUTINE

    Hi everyone

I think the most important routine for me is checking my bag because I always need to check if my homework book and reading book was there and also I need to check if my water bottle is full before packing it.

    Tammy:)

I think the main point is that he has a routine and thats good because, if he does everything all at once then he has time to watch TV, or spend time with his family (etc).

What i need to improve is i need to be more organized, like today (7 September Wednesday) i was at school doing basketball and then it finished so i went out of school but then half way from school, i just remembered that i forgot my lunch box so i had to go back to school and get my lunch box.

When i was running to get it, i left my bag right next to the cafe and when i came back i forgot my PE bag on the bench and i was SOO close to my apartment that i had to take a motorbike back to school, get my PE bag and then i went straight home and if i forgot something then i would just go OH WHATEVER!!!.

So i have to get more organized and create more time tables and schedules. And also i should make an organized routine.

    Mara 😀

    My routine everyday:

    1. I check my schedule and pack my schoolbag every night so I don’t have a lot of stress in the morning before I go to school.

    2. I clean my room every day before I go to bed so when I do my homework my things don’t get mixed up with the others and then my room is really cluttered.

    3. I make sure I sleep at 8:30 or 9:00 so I can wake up early in the morning and get to school before there is any traffic.

    4. Get my uniform ready for the next day and put my clothes in the laundry after I wear it.

    5. DO NOT FORGET TO DO MY ROUTINE!!!!
