Homework: Being scientists with the future in mind…

This is  Paula’s comment from yesterday’s homework.

  • What do you think of what she is saying?
  • Can you think of examples of inventions that do seem to “think” about the future?
  • Can you think of a way to make something so that it is not harmful to our world in the future?

I think she is saying that scientists have to think about our future and not making a product that will not be wasted or be harmfull to the world.
The inventions that is good for earth is that:
    1. sun dial because it does not use a electrical city
    2. wind generater that uses wind to get electrical city
    3. Dam because it cleanes the water and make electrial city
    4. electricaled car
    etc…
I think we should have a shrink machine that shrinks the trashes and make it small to put every trashes in the world in a small place.

      April 27, 2011 at 5:22 pm

Dams can also block off water to different villages and some people might not like dams.

      • Mr. Sam
        April 27, 2011 at 6:07 pm

This is a very good point, Michael. Although dams produce energy in a clean way, they involve huge changes to the place they are built in. Check out this video about the Three Gorges Dam in China:

        April 27, 2011 at 6:46 pm

Michael dams doesn’t work like battle stratagies now. Long ago soldiers used the dam to break the river to float to the other side of the country.
Also nowadays the dams floats clean water into the river.

      April 27, 2011 at 5:49 pm

I think you should think more realistic Sae-Yeon, but if you think that we should invent a shrinking machine then why don’t you get started on making one?

      • Mr. Sam
        April 27, 2011 at 5:55 pm

The shrinking machine is a realistic idea, but it is called “compacting”. People have been using them for a long time, the problem is… we are running out of space even for all the things that have been “compacted”.

Here’s some information from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waste_compaction

Paula I mean scientistshould make one and in the future. 😦

    • Yeachan
      April 27, 2011 at 9:22 pm

I agree with Saeyeon because scientists must think about the future with thinking not just making and use them and thinking about how much money they will get. So they have to keep researching and making the things that won’t get energy wasted very much, reusable things and less harmful to the environment such as..

1.Solar power house (because the whole energy from that house comes from solar energy)
      2. Atomic energy (Because it doesn’t waste environment and it makes energy from its power)
      3. Recyclable materials (Because we can make many things from trash and we can make things such as recycled papers)
      4. Dam (Because it can resist from drought and flood and it can also make energy)

Now, for Atomic energy, it is also dangerous because if the energy explods, the radiation comes out and it makes people die.

For dam, if there are too many dams, the environment will destroyed and the people will have to move into other place because dam takes many part.

A thing so that it is not harmful to our world in the future will be maybe as I said we could make things such as recyclable materials.

        April 27, 2011 at 9:37 pm

I agree with you Yeachan because I never thought the other examples of the inventions!

  2. Jin
    April 27, 2011 at 4:25 pm

I also agree with him and I think they really need to make unharmful products. Start to make things that are good for the environment. Electronic devices are full of chemicals, so scientists better be careful about it.

I thiknk they should invent things like non-chemical bottles because Thai people or foreigners just throw plastic bottles away into the bin and it takes 500years or so for the plastic to decompose. So superior scientists should like make bottles that can be decomposed fast or bottles that can be recycled in good things.

Also like an electric golf cart that roams around Manhattan and NIST can be a good thing but NIST carts maybe should use vegetable oil like the guy Andy with his truck when he got leftover veg oil because it’s not as harmful as the real oil and it will clean the environment 😆

    April 27, 2011 at 4:25 pm

I think what she meant was scientists should look at a bigger picture of their products and the future.
The inventions that seem to “THINK” about the future is:
1.Sundial as what Saeyeon said because it do not use electricity.
2.The project that we saw at Chitralada Palace: water wheel, wind mill.
3.Dam like Sae Yeon said it cleans the water and it blocks water from going to somwhere it shouldn’t.
I think we can have a machine that produce seeds so people can use it to plant trees.

    • Mr. Sam
      April 27, 2011 at 6:04 pm

You’re right, there’s lots of great ideas for how science can be used positively at Chitralada. http://kanchanapisek.or.th/kp1/index_en.html

You’ll have to explain your seed machine idea to me, I’m not really getting it.

  4. Am
    April 27, 2011 at 5:06 pm

What Paula is saying is that when scientists are inventing and coming up with new amzing ideas, they should really have the big picture and the future in mind like we focused on in the exhibition. Scientists need to know about the effects and future problems before producing. Paula is also saying that if Scientists can’t find the big future and Scientists don’t the future in mind, they just have to restart and create something new. I strongly agree with this and that everything we do is reasonable.

Some examples that are inventions that have been thought about for the future, I would say the Kings’ products for example the water wheel that the King created. It had some thought in it because it helps our environment and cleans it for us and its very useful. The Bio-Truck in my perspective had some thought because since the creator now knows how we can use reused oil for our car engines, in the future things might change. However the truck has pollution and is using a lot of fossil fuels, but it can have a better effect. (When I was writing this I thought of those 2 examples, and they were all written by Jin and May already-a coincidence.) Another example is cloth bags in my opinion because these bags can elad to a better future. If every single one of us use cloth bags everyday, we don’t have to throw and waste plastic. Cloth bags were probably invented ages ago, but it can really help us if people start ‘massaging ideas into reality’.

I agree with Jin that we can have an engine of the BioTruck, and use it for our school community because we have a lot of food cooked, so we can use that oil. This is a hard question, and I really cant thinkof one that wont harm our future. I think that I don’t have any ideas is because we don’t actually have anything that won’t harm our future, so it’s hard to think realistically.

    • Mr. Sam
      April 27, 2011 at 6:15 pm

You’re right, it is very hard to come up with new ideas for things that won’t harm our future. Most of the best ideas seem to be things that have been around for a long time – maybe we need to go “back to basics”!

I follow this organization on Twitter and they are always sending out great ideas, involving science, for how we can live more responsibly: http://www.dothegreenthing.com/

  5. Johan
    April 27, 2011 at 5:16 pm

I think she is saying that scientists have the responsibility to not just invent things but also think about where all the things go when you have made an invention or an expirement.

I think that lots of expirements seem to think about the future, espically the ones that the King Of Thailand made. Also like Jin said elictric cars I guess are some inventions that might care about the future. Although the materials that golf carts are made out of might be something people would just rip apart and then throw it in a place where there is lots of space.

Maybe you could make platic bags that don’t have lots of chemicals in it and that is not bad for the enviormant. Maybe you can also make cars that are not made out of metal or any other bad material instead out of something that is good for the enviorment.

    • Mr. Sam
      April 27, 2011 at 6:20 pm

It would be interesting to ask scientists/inventors and other people involved with creating new technology and things (stuff) that people buy and use to find out if they ever actually do think about what might happen to them in the future.

We will look at this video in class soon, but you can take a look now if you want.

    Why is Samantha making homework?

    • Paula
      April 27, 2011 at 5:54 pm

Sam is making homework because we were using Mr. Sam’s computer earlier and she was probably still logged in.

    • Mr. Sam
      April 27, 2011 at 6:16 pm

Oh yes, you’re right!!! I didn’t see that!

It’s a pretty cool ideas though, maybe you guys should create the homework?

  7. Pimboon
    April 27, 2011 at 5:18 pm

I think Paula means that the scientist should think about the future when/while inventing or making something. And I also agree with Sae-Yeon that they invent something that is harmless.
I think the Dams are good for the future as Sae-Yeon said because it can hold some water, clean it and create some electricity. I also think the thing that is good for the future is the Wind Generator and I agree with Sae-Yeon again.
I agree with Jin about the making non-chemical bottles for us to use, and I also think that they should make (if possible) some kind of paper that isnt used from trees or some stuff that doesnt have to bring out all the chemicals out of cars and stuff.

    • Mr. Sam
      April 27, 2011 at 6:30 pm

So, you think there’s probably a better way to make most of the things we need. Well, why don’t we make things that way? What is our problem?

  8. michaelt
    April 27, 2011 at 5:21 pm

I think what she is saying is that scientist need to deal with their inventions when they are thrown away. She is also saying scientists need to look at the future of their product and if the future is bad they need to find a solution. They also have to look at the big picture.

    1. I think things that use no electricity like the sundial or maybe even things that people have to use like a hammer or a Ax

    2. The Eco friendly products

    3. books that are made out of recycled materials

I think that we should have a Eco friendly sky train that people can use instead of cars

  9. Manisha
    April 27, 2011 at 5:37 pm

What Paula is trying to say is that the scientists need think about the future and start making things which is Eco friendly. Some invasions which have started to think about the future are
    1.Reused pencils
    2.Cloth bags like Am said
    3.Windmills
    4.Water wheels
The scientists can reuse the trash and make stuff out of it.Or the scientists could Eco friendly machines.

    • Mr. Sam
      April 27, 2011 at 6:36 pm

These are all things from 100 years ago!

  10. Paul
    April 27, 2011 at 5:41 pm

I think what Paula is saying is very true. Scientists when they find out or create things they only think of how much money they are going to make or paying for there kids to go to collage but then what is your kids kids does not get to go to collage because of it. I think recycling was something that had the future in mind because it gave us a way to reuse and do other things with garbage. recycling will help in the future it will because we will know that trash is being used to help us not to destroy us. On one of my last comments I talked about cars and how is is wasting fossil fuels and polluting. If we could convince everyone to change there cars for electric cars then we could instead of having a gas station have a power station where you can charge up your car it would make such a big change to everything but mainly the environment.

    • Mr. Sam
      April 27, 2011 at 6:37 pm

But how would we create the electricity to put into the cars? Most electricity is created using fossil fuels.

  11. sebastian
    April 27, 2011 at 5:55 pm

I think she is saying that the scientists have all the responsibility to invent and think where things go because scientists are the people with lots of knowledge and they actually know what they are doing when they do experiments and invent things.

I think about many inventions so its hard to choose and I agree with Jin, electric cars seem to be a very big one because there is a lot of pollution going around in the world and we need to stop that. I think scientist should start focusing on changing sea water to normal water they already do this but there could be a easier way to do it because it takes up a lot of electricity.

Maybe people could reserve places for nature and if you build something there you will be fined.

    • Mr. Sam
      April 27, 2011 at 6:39 pm

You are talking about desalination: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desalination

You’re right though, it isn’t so simple. There will definitely be side-effects of desalination. Can you think of more?

  12. 18julienn
    April 27, 2011 at 5:59 pm

I think she is saying that scientists have to think about our future and not making a product that will not be wasted or be harmfull to the world. I would say that most of the experiments have been done the king. Maybe I will find a way to make paper without having to cut down trees.

    • Mr. Sam
      April 27, 2011 at 6:39 pm

Could you possibly put more thought and energy into your homework?

  13. gabi
    April 27, 2011 at 6:09 pm

What do you think of what she is saying?
I think that she means that scientist right now don’t have a choice about where things can go when being trashed right now i think they are still are thinking about the places.
Can you think of examples of inventions that do seem to “think” about the future?
-more electronics:la-touch (laptop touch screen), a life full of glass (actually going to happen), new kind or cars.
Can you think of a way to make something so that it is not harmful to our world
    in the future?
not buy too much or if you don’t need it don’t buy latest i phone or laptop, make something that is useful and not bad for the environment

    • Mr. Sam
      April 27, 2011 at 6:41 pm

Maybe you’re right, Gabi. Maybe it is us who cause the problem because of all the things we want. The scientists and inventors just come up with ideas. If we simplify the way we live perhaps it will help.

  14. Terrie
    April 27, 2011 at 6:11 pm

I think Paula want to try to say that the scientist have to notice how many they wasted for their product. And not just how many money they get when they finish their product an wasted. If they keep going like that make product and wasted the wil have responsibility to deal their product.
    Thinking about future:
    1. Reusing plastic bag, can put on bin
    2. Using cloth bag, and stop using plastic bags
    3. Reusing the cloths, like when the size to small, you can gave it to other people who can wear them
The scientist can make a car, and the smoke will never come out. And maybe they can make a rubbish machine also like Saeyeon says, when we put the rubbish in the mashine, ans turn it, it will become air and water.

    • Mr. Sam
      April 27, 2011 at 6:49 pm

Good, realistic ideas, Terrie. But, how can we turn rubbish into air and water without creating pollution?

You can turn some rubbish into soil that can be used to grow plants, it is called composting and we don’t do it at NIST! Why not? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compost

      • Terrie
        April 28, 2011 at 9:23 am

Paula don’t have to do homework?

    • Mr. Sam

Of course she does. She can elaborate (tell us more) about her thinking!

I think that palla is tring to say that if you creat something you have to think what will happen to it like when I was going to poot my plate in the cafterya I hade to think like huuum kids migth destroy it huum it cood teach a lot so you have to think a hed. some think you have to think about is a boom like if you do not think a hed a lot of people can get hurt. probly win turbies that make iletristy

    • Mr. Sam
      April 27, 2011 at 6:55 pm

Yes, you’re right, we need to start “thinking ahead”. Not doing that is clearly a human problem over the last 100 years or so. Wind turbines are a great example. They use them a lot in Europe. I was amazed by these ones in Spain when I was driving through there: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-yLYfBCAVU

Some people think they are ugly, but I think what they are doing is beautiful.

I remember earlier in the year a guy came to our school who was traveling around the world in his truck that runs on vegetable oil, that was a very eco-friendly invention. I can’t remember his name but he had a very cosy and creative place to live.

    http://www.mushroompackaging.com/

These 2 men invented packaging that was made from mushrooms instead of Styrofoam
this is a very extreme example of an eco-friendly invention.

All things on this page have highly impressed me and I am interested in owning some things like the washing machine or the eco-laptop or the remote control.

    http://www.yourenew.com/

This is connected to yesterdays homework and these guys are extremely inspiring, if I find some old electric devices I will try to send it to them. In one part of the video they say they believe in reusing first, but I believe in reducing first to even avoid getting to this situation, though their project is focusing on if it has already come to the situation of people not reducing when they do not need things anyway.

  18. 18Aayushk
    April 27, 2011 at 7:39 pm

I agree with her as I also think that scientist should look at the backside of things on only the obvious side. I also think that you should look for the big picture of things. But I disagree that all inventions which can’t be recycled shouldn’t be used. For example medicine because the benefit outweighs the problems caused by the wastage.

Inventions, which help use environmentally friendly products for example eco friendly deodorant, cloth bags, solar panels etc. Also inventions, which use renewable sources of energy, like hybrid cars and windmills, which save and generate electricity.

I think we can make an eBook instead of a book so that we don’t waste paper. An eBook is a book made on the computer.

  19. Anirudh
    April 27, 2011 at 8:03 pm

What Paula is trying to say is that scientists need to carry a responsibility of what they are making so when it is a waste, they need to deal with it. Scientists need to be thinking about the future in mind. Scientist should also be looking the bigger picture in their mind so they know what will happen to it in a few years. If they can’t think of the big picture in mind but think about money then they should not create, invent and bring new theories.

I think the good inventions are cloth bags, King’s water wheel, Recycling bottles and the bio-truck because it does not use petrol and it uses vegetable oil. Electric carts in my view are not good for the future because they use electricity and electricity might run out if we waste it.

I also feel that scientists could make stuff out of waste and make something out of it like bags etc. They could reuse paper and make it into something else. In short they could just make the environment a safer place to live in.

  20. Pin
    April 27, 2011 at 8:50 pm

Oh I already post but it deleted it?? so i’ll post it again-
I think that Paula means when scientist have new creations and are inventing something they should get the big picture and think for the future not only the present.
I agree with all of you about the inventions that save the earth, I can’t think any more. Like anirudh I think cloth bags a good idea also i agree with saeyeon, I think Biotruck and BioPlastic is also a good idea.
I also agree with all of you that there are many inventions that humans like us can create. I think we should make more handmade things. Continueing from saeyeon I think that its a good idea to have a shrinking machine but the machine will cost loads of money and it will waste alot of power, electricity, chemicals oils etc. So I think handmade things are better rather than using a machine. 🙂
