How can science make you wise?

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Our guest speaker, Thom Henley, said this:

“We are educating kids to be smart, but we’re not educating kids to become wise.”

I think that the difference between smart and wise is : being smart involves knowing things, but being wise is being able to use what you know in order to improve your life.

Thom told us the story of how people who pass their stories on orally (by the elders telling them to the young people) all survived the 2004 Tsunami because they knew what to do. Meanwhile, lots of very “smart” people died because they did the opposite!

How can knowing about science help you to improve your life? Give us some examples.

I think science can help improve your life because If you learn about things related to science like natural disasters such as tsunamis you should know to go to a high spot if the water goes down. Science can also improve your life and other peoples lives because if you become a scientist or a inventor you can create machines and medicine that could save someones life or improve their lives.

If you know sicience it helps you to pridict the future by reading some books. I founded out that birds will be gone when earthquake happense and snakes will be dead and also fishes will be captured easily and dogs, cats and rats will act strange before the earthquake. sciense make you wise by supplise like the electricalcity, and that some guys made this wingthingy to make the electricalcity.

I dont really know much about science- but I agree with Michael that we need science to know how much the tsunami comes through so that we can go to a high spot and know where the waves will stop. And I also agree with Sae-Yeon about particular animal behaviours before a natural disaster. For example- we might have been studiying science and know alot about natural disasters and how it acts and stuff- so we are learning about the thing and being smarter and we also know the cause and the solution and stuff so we are also being wise- like 2 things at the same time, so we might learn alot and know alot and be more wise to help yourself if theres like a disaster or something. That might help your life too.

I think people will disagree but I made this quoet up ‘Its hard to be smart but easy to be wise’ Its probably takes you about your whole life to be smart but you can be wise in a snap if your parent and the books you read about sciece is interesting.

I disagree with pimboon a little bit because in Japan tsunamis often happen a lot but the earth quake that happend to Japan the normal earthquake is about 4meters~6meters high sothe Japanese people went to high land that is about 7meters high but the tsumami was aroud 10meters high.

I agree with Michael that science can help us in life situations like natural disasters.
Knowing about science just simply help us achieve things-everything has science in it and if we want a product, we need to know the science in it. For example for the process of making my book, I had to choose the right paper and the right cover because if I didn’t choose the glossed cover, it may not last longer.
With the knowledge about science, we can know about the future, and also about the present. If we have some knowledge about for example computers, we would know how to use it correctly and how it functions. With science and the connection of future, we can correctly improve future products for us and our planet and it can be a product with positivity. If we have a lot of information on science, maybe someone can invent a type of transport that is practical, good for the environment and make us want to use it.
This can improve our life by our future. If we grow up knowing a lot about science, our life can be a good life and we won’t have to sit around all day and do nothing. It can help us with all the compass lenses-nature by us creating a better way to protect nature or increase nature with the help of science; economy by us getting a good job of creating a company; society by us being able to share our ideas and combine our work and form a community with lots of people; and well-being by we can be happier and be healthy with all the things we have with knowledge of science.
Similar to what Thom Henley said; science can make us wiser. If we educate a lot on science, we can be wiser people because we will get to know a lot more about the world, and beware of what’s going on. Sometimes if we know a lot about science, it can’t help us be more wiser at all. But if we think about it, we can use our science in many situations, and our life can be better. We can save out own lives, have the right knowledge about things for example plants like May said-the right plants to touch and ones to not touch.
If we gather all this information, science can really improve out lives.

I think that science can help us imrpove life because science is almost everything and if we learn about it more we can know more about the world and know what to do. Also if we know more about science we know about almost everything and when there’s natural disasters we know what to do and we can survive. If at school we learn about the world or life we know what’s dangerous and not like I said today for example: When we go out and we got lost we can know what plants is dangerous and not and if you fell you can use the plant to cure the wound.

I think that knowing about science can improve your life because everything around us is science so we need to understand it for example if you didn’t know anything about sockets and if you put your finger in side the socket you will get electrocuted so thats why you need to understand it.I think that knowing about science can improve your life because if you know more about science it will give you a happier life and you will know exactly what to do.
I agree with Am that alot of science can’t help us be wiser.

I think science can improve your life because if you learn about science you will know what to do if a tsunami comes and your knowledge about science will save your life in a lot of different issues. Science can also improve your life because it can bring some fun in your life for example, if you have nothing to do you can make little scientific experiments.

I also agree with Sae Yeon about the animal’s behaviors.

I read this comic book about surviving in the earthquake and when before the night when the earthquake was about to strike, the guard said to the Japanese to evacuate to a safer place. But the main characters were sleeping. So the next day they went fishing and they got lots of catfish. I didn’t know that time because I was about 6 or 7. But after that incident they faced the earthquake. Also when I watched natural disaster movies the animals act really weird and the birds just go away and next the tsunami erupts. Enough talking about natural disasters.

I think science can help us improve our lives because there are plants that can cure you because they have scientific effects on it. Also the lights(even though it destroys the environment greatly.

How high is a normal tsunami? About up to 10m or something because one day when I go to a beach and I go to high grounds the tsunami might strike me. I disagree with Ken about just being wise with a snap because sometimes you get really lazy and you can’t be wise in everything unless you practice.

Science can make you wise in many ways, for example if you are experimenting something you can remember what happens so you have the experience for example if you experiment with fire and see which is stronger water of course but it helps us because if we need to put the fire out we know that water can do that,
another way is for a soap company they test it on animals that might be something bad but still it’s not dangerous for us anymore because it was tested.

  12. April 25, 2011 at 5:43 pm

I agree what Michael said because it’s kind of true that science can improve your life.

I agree with all of you guys!!
But science can also help improve your life in many many diffeerent issues. For example if you live in an country like Japan or maybe New Zealand then it is probably good to know about science because a lot of earthquakes come to these to countries. So bassiclly you need to know where to go if and earthquake comes and you need to know if that place is strong and safe enough for a person/people to go there. I also agree a lot with Julien and how he said that if you have nothing to do then you can try out some science expirments and see how things work. That might also help you later on in the future.

I also agree with Jin and Sae-yoen that animals can guide us through science and help us be better environmentally and find out different things about our planet. People that create things such as electric cars are improving our life because we would use up so much more oil. We could even make gas stations into charging stations. My point is that if people find out a way for us to stop using fossil fuels it will be great and a big improvement on life. if we could create a way to recycle everything and reuse we will be living in a much cleaner place because there will be no rubbish on the street of in the ground.

I think sience is important for the future because mostly every thing uses sience. Even the fact that in the future you will have to be a risk taker and in sience you do many experiments and that helps you become a risk taker and open minded. I think sience helps make life easeir espescially the shape of everthing and how it helps.

When I become a cricketer I will be probably be a bowler and so I will need the the sience because I need to know how to shine the ball and make it swing(curve) and other ways that can confuse the batsmen like a cutter because it spins or something. Ill need it for aiming like when Im bowling I need to put my foot in a cretain direction for aiming and also for helping other things. When I bat Ill need to know the spot of the bat I should hit with and at what time. What type of a shot will make it go where and why?

I agree with with almost everyone because I think science can improve your life in lots of different ways. Using science we know where we are in place and time better. We know how things work more and what is inside things we know everyday.
I agree with what Tom Henley said about how science makes us wiser because with science we can find out how things work and how you should react to thing for example if a earthquake strikes you know what to do.

Here are some examples of how science can improve your life:

science helps us know what to do when a natural disasters strikes, know what to do when an electronic stops working, tell time, make a shelter, be more environmentally friendly, be more healthy, get clean drinkable water, find out whats around you and how it works better.

For example science helps us be more healthy because science helps us understand the ingredients on products which enables us to choose the right things to eat/drink. For example if I see a yogurt with 75 % chemicals and see a yogurt with 12% chemicals I will choose the healthier one with less chemicals.
Another short example is how science has helped us discover a variety of ways to clean water. This keeps us free of disease and healthy.

I think science can improve our life. For example if your learn science, you will know how to solve some problem,.like when you are on the beach, and know what happen before the tsunami, and you in the sea, and you know tsunami will come, and shout at every yo leave the beach quickly, and you save people’s life!!
For example, there is a big fire, an you just learn about the science of how to do the smoke will not come to nose and you teach other people to do a current things and you save you and other people’s life. And maybe they will pay it forward, and they will some one else, and you teach and help lot of people for what you learn at science.

Hey aayush I heard that to make very dirty water to clean water it takes 1 year per liter and pollutes a lot. It was a long time ago when i heard it but yeah. I personaly dont think its true

I think science can help us in a lot of things in life. Like Michael said if theres any natural disasters then if we know science then it can help save our life and we could also save peoples life. Also almost every thing is science so its good to learn about it because almost every thing in the world includes science because the people who invent these stuff have to take a really long time to think about it carefully and they have to measure and do all the science until it is perfect and that is how many every day use things are made. I think that if we understand science more deeply and look into the objects that we use every day then it can also help you in life by if there were fake things that people have made and your family is about to buy the product selling, then if your a person that observes carefully then you might realize that its fake and you can secretly tell your mother and father and give them the facts. They will probably believe you and then they will tell the seller that they will come and look later or not really interested now. Then if we know about science and we are really into it then we can also improve our living and our next generations. If we are really passionate about something like if I am passionate about the pollution then I can protest and use my knowledge of science to help the world and to complete my goal. I can use my science to develop the earth in a positive way like to improve products that already exist into better products or invent new products that will help improve the world.

well science canbe help full by tething you things that cood ptect you like for exampel if you never lund that a light bulb can get really hot you might phick it up and get bunt but this is gust a small exsampel so a biger exampel is like for a nathel dsaster if you study science you might know what will happen and it cood save your life

Having the knowledge of science will enable humans to become wise that’s why its important we learn about every detail of basic objects which helps us estimate others that are similar.

“All technology is based n science.”
    -Sylvia McLain

“It is only through scientific research that many of the greatest challenges facing humanity can be solved, whether the issue is clean energy, understanding climate change, or health issues facing an ageing population.”
    -Paul Crowther

“Science is important because if we don’t quest to understand our universe and the amazing things in it then we are not carrying on the traditions of our forefathers and trying to develop our scientific understanding, but not looking at the possibilities of what the future may hold, and we’re not grasping this opportunity that we can understand something about the universe and our brains and ourselves.”
    -Becky Parker

    “All scientists are inquisitive people.”
    -Ann Lingard

“Science is important because, just as much as literature, or art, or music, it teaches us to be human. It’s part of us, part of who we are.”
    -Richard P. Grant

Scientific knowledge will help us improve in life because they help us estimate and figure out how things function, and that gives the wisdom of knowing how to act towards the objects surrounding us.

I agree with Terrie. I think science improves our life because for example if the earthquake or tsunami happens and we know how to avoid dangers and we will save our life.
And science is used in many different ways. Actually, I think science is everywhere, even in a tiny thiny things. So if we know many science, our life will be more comfortable because science makes our life more easier.

My exhibition is about te connection heath and happiness and if there is no science, it will be hard to find connection and it will be also hard to find informations because we search with computer so this is another reason for why science can improve our life.
