Homework – Where is the science?

At home, this evening, choose a room in your home and do exactly what we did today. “Find the science”. What science can you see, hear, feel, smell, taste? Make a comment on this posting to explain your thinking, tell us what you know and ask questions. Read other people’s comments too so that you can make connections, ask and answer questions, say what you think and develop a scientific conversation.

Here’s the work you did today to help you get started:

I am looking in the living room. I can feel that there are some mysteries on the plastic bottle and because it’s different shaped then drinking can and the bottom shape. Also I have a feed back to Jon or someone that I found out that there are 70 or 80% of water in our body. I can see that the tape is science because I am wondering that how did the bottom of the tape made out of, so that is sticky. I wonder how the telephone works and I can hear TV sound.

      April 20, 2011 at 7:22 pm

I’ve been doing some research about bottles and why there is an indentation on the bottom and I haven;t found anything about balance yet. Can you remember where you got that information from?

  2. April 20, 2011 at 4:05 pm

I am looking on the living room too. I can feel that there are mysteries in some wood blocks cause it attaches really tightly and can be remove again and again. I can see that wood blocks is for your mind to be strong. I hear the wood blocks cracking to open. I smell good wood that is make out of blocks to make your mind strong. I taste nothing really.

    • Mr. Sam
      April 20, 2011 at 7:22 pm

What wood blocks are you talking about, Odette? Your comment is quite strange!

I am also looking in a living room and I can see things that are connected to science. Speakers are connected to science because I think it is very interesting when the speakers vibrate they create sound. Gravity is very obvious because it holds everything down. Plants are also connected to science and nature. Lightbulbs are connected to science because they use electricity and it is still something that scientist are experimenting with.

    • Mr. Sam
      April 20, 2011 at 7:23 pm

Can you add any more detail to these things? What else do you know?

I can hear birds and people playing football.

    • Mr. Sam
      April 20, 2011 at 7:24 pm

What is the science that enables you to hear the birds, or the people playing football?

I am also looking in the living room. I can feel the cold floor (cause I’m sitting on the floor) and I felt that there’s somethings inside the floor that is really really tight. I can smell my smelly body cause I’ve been sweating all day and our body produce sweat by : We have millions of sweat glands covering our body. Each of them is able to produce tiny drops of moisture on your skin when your body overheats. There’s gravity every where in the room. I can see the plant that produce oxygen. I can hear my brother chewing his snack.

    • April 20, 2011 at 4:52 pm

I wonder why everyone is looking in there living room?

maybe because its the nearest room they are in and the living room has almost every thing in there.

    • Mr. Sam
      April 20, 2011 at 7:25 pm

What is the science involved in your brother chewing his snack? What do you mean when you say there’s some things inside the floor that is really tight?

I am looking in my home kitchen. I can see the microwave, stove, refrigerator, tap, water purifier, wine cooler, light bulb- all those things are science. I hear the sound of the compressor of the fridge and the running tap water. I smell yummy food. I taste the fresh water melon and mango.

    • 18aayushk
      April 20, 2011 at 5:46 pm

Can you tell us why the microwave, stove, refrigerator, tap, water purifier, wine cooler, light bulb are connected to science.

      • Mr. Sam
        April 20, 2011 at 7:26 pm

Yes, what do you know about how those things work? What is the science of taste and fruit? We don’t just want to know what you’re eating! We want to know the science!!!

  7. Am
    April 20, 2011 at 5:27 pm

I am looking at my bedroom-the room I sleep in. I have a lot of belongings there, so it can be interesting.

The science that I can see is this room is: The computer I am using now-it has to use electricity to connect with the charger. It has wires and devices inside the computer and it functions surprisingly well! I wonder how the gears and devices all work together; and where we all get these things in computers! I can also see the hair dryer-which is kind of also manual and is powered by electricity. The science within it is what’s inside and how it functions. The way when I switch it on, how it all starts to let out the wind and I can change it to cold air, warm, or hot.

I can hear a soft rumbling sound of the air-con, which is again powered by electricity. I wonder how it takes in all the air and filters it out-the cycle of its function must be very extraordinary. I can also hear the music coming from my computer. I wonder how it goes through the earphones, and what devices are inside the earphones to have sound travel within it.

I can feel my legs on the hard wood floor, that is all tight like May said. The science beyond it is is there even anything int he wood? What is deeper beyond the wood? I can also feel myself scrolling and clicking on my mouse now and again. It is connected by the computer and it functions from only connecting by the computer. I wonder how it just works when I plug it into the computer, and what devices are in the small mouse which makes it function so well!

Last but not least, I can taste the tasteless taste of my water. It is scientific because water is combined with hydrogen and oxygen and they are chemicals I THINK? Also it relates to gravity because the gravity holds everything down. Without gravity I wouldn’t be able to drink any water in a cup! Gravity is in the care of the earth (as far as I know), and it is very interesting of how it holds everything down.

    • Pimboon
      April 20, 2011 at 5:30 pm

I agree with you- Am how the hiar dryer works and the computer. But I dont think water is that tasteless!

      • Am
        April 20, 2011 at 5:38 pm

Well, I jsut don’t really know how to put it!! Okay, It isn’t tasteless. I taste a bit cold, and it’s unexplainable!! It has a taste, but It doesn’t have a flavour.

    • Mr. Sam
      April 20, 2011 at 7:30 pm

This is great, Am. You have really thought carefully about the things around you. I like the way that you have said what you know, but have also said what you wonder about things. That is called “curiosity” and curious people are the ones who make discoveries and innovations.

    April 20, 2011 at 5:29 pm

At my house- teh bedroom the living room and the bathroom are all the same room because theres only 2 people living in it. So basically now Im facing the living room. I kinda agree with SaeYeon about the TV stuff, like how it works with teh soaud and pictures and the cable and how you could change from 1 channel to another 1 so fast or change it to a movie or something. I also agree with him about the tape thing and how they make 1 side sticky but its all clear. And the comeputer- since its what Im facing right now- how it applys everything and how you could type and it will appear like on the next second- and how it wirelessly connects with the internet box and gives us random websites when we search them. Its like the computer is our mini-slave thing. And I also think about the fridge- which is in between the living room and the bedroom. I wonder how it works by keeping itself cool 24/7 and not making the things inside rot- and how it has a light everytime you open it or how you could change the temperature instantly. Im also noticing my phone- and how it changes the screen everytime I touch it and kinda “order’ it to od something and how it calls people very quickly. I also want to know how the plastic water bottle is made because we have quite a few of them.

    • Jin
      April 20, 2011 at 5:41 pm

I also agree with Sae Yeon and Pimboon

I checked my living room and I found some science: The TV, like Sae Yeon said, how it can turn into another channel so fast and the sound systems and how it can get things from all around the world(not all around the world) also the remote control because I don’t know if there is something inside a remote control that makes the sensitivity inside a TV really active and like that. I also found the science in the AC about how it can get air from places and how it is cold. Also the AC Remote because I think that It’s also like the TV one. Maybe the AC also has a sensitivity thingy. I also found science in the fan because I think it’s really cool how it can move just by connecting the plug into the plughole. Also how the wings of the fan can move. I wonder what technology this fan is holding.

      • 18jinj
        April 20, 2011 at 7:44 pm

I also wonder about my snack indentation because I don’t know what they put inside that to make it balance. I want to know more about it. So I will try to ask Sae Yeon. 😈

        • 18jinj
          April 20, 2011 at 7:47 pm

I also wonder about something. It’s that my T90 football is designed inside like something and I want to know the inside of a football. Because when I want to know what is in the football then I will know it 😆

    • Mr. Sam
      April 20, 2011 at 7:34 pm

We have to make sure that we don’t become the “mini-slave things” of computers instead!!!

It is very hard to even start to understand how computers work, I think it is something to do with binary codes, have you heard of them?

      • 18jinj
        April 20, 2011 at 7:42 pm

Isn’t it a computer code? My brother told me about it. 😮

I’m looking in the living room. I can see the garden outside my window and a parking lot. I can hear the typing of my computer and my mom preparing dinner. I can feel the airconditioner blowing on me and the cold floor. I can smell the food from the kitchen and my dog. I could taste my saliva. The things that are science in here is the airconditioner, the computer and the glass i’m looking through.

    • Mr. Sam
      April 20, 2011 at 7:35 pm

Yes, but what do you know about all that science? Can you give us more information, more knowledge?

  10. 18aayushk
    April 20, 2011 at 5:43 pm

I chose my bedroom because I see lots of things that could be science.
I can see the computer which is science because there are lots of wires connected to the computer which shows it is connected electricity as well as it keeps running out of battery meaning there are batteries and other confusing parts in the back of the computer. The computer is connected to wifi using signals which you can’t see. They are like radio signals. But I am still not sure how the computer catches the signals, do any of you know?
I can also see the fan which is science because it has a process using electricity. I am not very sure how the fan works though so I researched about it. Here is the information I found:
Electric fans work with an electric machine which spines the blades making breeze, the breeze cools your skin down. The breeze itself does not feel cool but the air allows your skin to evaporate faster making you cooler. I found this information using this website: http://www.ehow.com/how-does_4564463_electric-fans-work.html
I can also see a vuvuzela which works with our blow which is wind energy which gets transformed into sound energy. The vuvuzula makes its sound because of its shape.
Also the keyboard is science because of its sound and how it’s made. When you hit a note the note hits a button and the wires move the note to the speakers which make the sound.
I can hear birds chirping and dogs barking.
Also a electric sharpener which scraps wood of the pencil and makes the led show.

    • Mr. Sam
      April 20, 2011 at 7:37 pm

This is great, Aayush, you have started to really give us some scientific explanations, such “I can also see a vuvuzela which works with our blow which is wind energy which gets transformed into sound energy”.

    My Room:
    My Computer:
uses electricity it shows pictures on the screen and it has sound coming from it you can control what happens with a lot of other thing with the computer. It is also a way to communicate.
    Printer:
uses electricity it will do what the computer tells it to do while it is hooked up to the computer. It prints out things that our on the screen of the computer and puts them on paper. I also has lots of buttons for controlling how the picture turns out.
camera: uses electricity it also should be hooked up to the computer to down load pictures so I can share them online. It also has lots of buttons so that I can control what it does. It needs to be charged by taking the battery out and plunging it in.

      April 20, 2011 at 5:50 pm

My speakers-uses electricity and is connected to the commuter and make sound from them.
Pencil sharpener-it takes to wood of the pencil which makes it shorter but makes the led come out.
My toy car. uses electricity it is controlled by the remote.
A/C-uses electricity, keeps my room cool and keeps the mosquitoes out.

I am looking in the living room and I hear sound waves from the window in the construction site. I can smell science from the stove which needs science to get working. I can see science from a plug connected to my Mac. I can taste science by chewing the rubber on the end of my pencil. That is science because the process that the rubber has gone through to become that shape and size.

    • Mr. Sam
      April 20, 2011 at 7:40 pm

This is very poetic, Julien. However, I am sure you could have worked a little harder to share more real information, real knowledge, real questions and real science.

i am looking at my kitchen.
    I see a stove,microwave,fridge,and a sink.
I hear the water running while my mom washes the dishes,
i feel the heat from the stove,
i can taste the steam coming from the food.
i can also smell my dog a little bit.

I thought you guys would use your own room, like I did. I was looking at my room and I noticed that everything has sience.

Anyways firstly I found a Football I wonder how the soft part inside and the last thick layer can stay really pumped. I wonder how the Pump inflates it air so that it doesen’t become soft.Feather-The feather is really fascinating because When it falls down it comes down really slowly. Fan- It’s so cool how the wires that connect to the fan makes it rotate which gives wind and also the fact that itcan be hotor cold.Blackboards are cool too because the way you can write with chalk instead of a pencil since you get bored of it sometimes.Telephone- the way my voice travels through the wire at a great speed(in a jiffy) It is just awesome.Canvases-The thick material blends so well with the paint espesially oil pantings how it makes colors mix or blend in each other wonderfuly.Squap-This is a game that is so cool I got it from India, anway this toy is different. You are supposed to put a small orange ball in one of the squap catching things. the science part is that you have to put your fingers through a valcroe strap which uses science and when you open your hand (in the strap) the closed orange mat that was folded, opens up and the ball shoots out and person has to close his racket and catch the ball inside then he can throw and I can catch.Lamination- The lamination is a smart Idea it protects the paper and the paper can’t be ruined.Pillows covers- the pillow covers always have to be the right size so it’s fits the pillows, and it’s facinating how many different varieties of covers are available for different pillow sizes. Locks and keys- How the key has to match the lock and you twist it to open something. Then I realised that magasine cut outs have to be stuck properly or else it won’t stick and It will fall out. vvb bbv

I am looking in the kitchen. I can feel the hot air from the stove and the table in it because I am working in it. I can smell my awesome body because I have been sweating and I can smell the food being cooked. Like Michael said gravity can be seen easily, if there was no gravity everything would be floating around. I can see the stove and the cooking and all the nature from the kitchen balcony. I can taste the flavor of the food from the cooking and the sweet taste of some of the sauces.

    • Mr. Sam

Do you know anything about the science of cooking, taste or smell?

  16. Ken
    April 20, 2011 at 6:13 pm

1.Computer Mouse(Behind the mouse there`s a fabric that stop the mouse from going so fast and when you acctivate the mouse under the mouse something lights up.)

2.Broken caculater(The solar energy part(I think) is broken and you can look inside that has a lot of wires)

3.Pen(Mostly on a pens cap it says not to eat for little kids but I think they (Scienctist) did a experiment and now some of the pens have a hole in the cap so even if the little kid eats it they can still breath)

4.Printer(Inside the printer there is ink and when we want to print something the ink goes side ways and colors it or make it black or white(well its already white))

Hi I am looking In my living room and I think my TV involves some science because how it shows all the shows sounds, next I saw my moms phone and my dad says phones have lithium in it so that would involves some chemical science also. for my last thing in school mr sam said the vibrations couts as science. All around the house there is science as simple as light 🙂

I investigated living room including computer place.

    1. Television (the brodcasting system like TRUE sends to TV and if we turn on it, the program shows and behind there are lots of wires).
    2. Computer keyboard (when we type letters, the sensor sends to computer so we can type them.)
    3. Printer (we use ink for printing something. And inside there are color ink and black-white ink. So when we try to copy something, the printer copy the thing with using ink. The other part just come black or white {I didn’t copy Ken} )
    4. DVD player (when we put a DVD or CD, the sensor read them and send to TV so we can watch movie or listen music)
    5. Clock (we put battery in it, and that power makes clock move)

I am investigating my parents room.

I can see the computer I am using now is connected to a charger which gives you battery. The computer has a whole lot of devices and cables to connect everything like, speakers, keyboard, mouse to the computer.

I can hear the Air Conditioner blowing on the top of the room and to make it you need to know all about how make the air/water cold and maybe fresh.

I can feel how my hands are typing on the keyboard which is connected using wires into the computer. I can also feel how I am sitting on my chair comfortabyle and that making sure it is stable enough. If i put my arm next to the chair I can sometimes fell and see static energy.

I can smell the food outside which is driven here by the wind, is it from the air conditioner?

I can taste the amzing taste of sticky ricer and mango. It is fascinating how they can make so different things and different tastes.

Today, I am going to search the Study Room. I chose to investigate the Study Room because there are a lot of interesting things in there that I think will probably have to do with Science. Here are some things that involve Science in the study room:

    Lights
Am posted a video about this on the blog. Light has something to do with the ‘Doppler effect’ which falls into the category Chemistry and Physics which is a kind of Science. The Doppler Effect is about the change of sound by distance, and the change of light when moving (Am’s explanation).

    Pens
You need chemicals to make ink for the pens. Chemicals, I think, fall into the category of Chemistry which is a kind of Science. You also need human force to move a pen back and forth and human force comes from food and water which usually has chemicals in them.

    Doors/Doorknob
To open a door you need to turn the doorknob. You need human force to turn a doorknob and human force comes from food and water which usually has chemicals in them (this sentence is similar to the one I used for the Pens explanation).

    Tissue Paper
I did some research on how tissue is made. One sentence from the piece of information said “The fiber is then placed in a mixing tank where the manufacturer adds any components that may be needed, such as dye”. This means that there are chemicals in tissue so that means there is chemistry in making tissue.

    Speakers/Sound
When the sound comes out of the speakers it creates sound waves. I don’t know exactly how this is related to science but I know for a fact that it does.

I know that there are a lot more objects in the study room that I could’ve written about but that would take a while.

    Sam

    April 20, 2011 at 10:06 pm

    I investigated the living room.
First what i found was a fan.I think this is science because inside the socket there is electricity and when we plug the wire into the socket the electricity travels through the wire and goes into the motor inside the fan which makes the fan rotate.I also found the bell was science because when it rings sound waves are produced and it travels through the air reaches your ear.I found out that clock is science because the energy stored in that makes the clock’s hands move.I also found out that mobile is also science but i don’t know how it works.
