Communicating our message visually

This morning, to make the most of our Art Teacher, Mr. Josh Davis, being in the room I asked you to think about how you could communicate your message visually. I gave you this task:

Here is a slideshow of the ideas you have come up with so far:

My idea for visual communication is to stop fining sharks, I was inspired by a guest speaker called shark guardian he really inspired me by telling how sharks are important to the sea and to stop fining sharks. I was doing a survey of who eats shark fin soup and I am raising awareness. I found out that 25 out of 135 people eat shark fin soup. 135 out of 135 people say that sharks are important to the sea.

My messege is to minimize the cars that come to NIST.
My idea for visual communication is making a poster.

      March 9, 2011 at 10:24 am

My poster that I am working on is about is a bicycle at the top, a sharing transport on the left, and a person walking on the right, which makes something like a triangle and I got the idea from the Recycle, Reuse, Reduce process and Mr. Josh helped me out.

This is a good idea. It will also look like our school logo, which will make it more powerful.

    This is what I did:

    My message is:
“Treat people nicely and if you see people getting bullied, help them out.”
I like this message because I alsays help people out when they’re bullied and when they’re bullied and when the bullies say”none of your business,” I just don’t even care about it and if the bully is a lot bigger and older than I do, I just tip off a teacher and if the bully escapes, I just get his name by asking people around him and he’s in a hole.
I am showing my message by video and 8 people said that they do something when they see people getting bullied.

My message is eating a balanced diet

My idea for visual communication is to make a poster that shows a balanced diet; and what you need to eat.

I like this idea. How can you make sure it is clear and simple enough for everybody to understand?

    My message is…
Drinking water and Connection with water. Drink more water to have a good well-being, drinking more water can help you a lot.
My idea for visual communication is…
powerpoint with videos, make a video, create a sculpture, make a poster. I have already made a video and I still need to edit it and make it better. I will also video more at lunchtime so I can get more clips of what is relevant.

This is too many forms of visual communication. Which one would be most effective for your message?

    March 9, 2011 at 10:15 am

My messege is minimizing the cars if nessecary, and have more choices to come to NIST. My idea for visual communication is making a sculpture showing cars, and dirtiness, fading to green and a variety choices to come in, and a clock showing the time… then there would be words to describe a bit.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 9, 2011 at 2:02 pm

I like the sculpture idea a lot, particularly if it shows a probable and preferable future and is not just negative. We have had millions of negative messages and nothing changes!

My issue is:Water waste at NIST

I am planning to do this in a video and a comic .I made the video for spot checks, and when I show my pesentation to smaa kids ,I will show them the comic because, kids likes comics then videos. comics are good because, comics can make serious stuff funny.mabye I will use xtranormal to.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 9, 2011 at 2:04 pm

I like the comic idea, but you will need to make sure you get your message across clearly. Otherwise, kids will just laugh but not learn anything.

My message is something that I want people to always keep in mind is: Be happy with what you have not with what you want!

My Idea for visual communication is Data charts, design images and photos.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 9, 2011 at 2:08 pm

What do you think will be the best way to convince people to be happy with what they have? What will people pay attention to?

  10. Michael
    March 9, 2011 at 10:16 am

My message is that you should treat people nicely and if you see someone being teased you should try to help them. My idea for visual communication is video and presentations. I think that visual communication is good because it dosent bore people.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 9, 2011 at 2:09 pm

You’re right, in fact visual communication has become the best way to communicate with people for that reason.

My message is water waste problem from NIST is that NIST students should turn off the tap while they are using the soap and turning off the tap when they are done washing their hands.

My idea for visual communication is to show a video to my audiences about how much NIST spends on water per month, how much water is used or wasted per day and a data about whether people turn off the tap when they are done washing their hands or if they’re done drinking water.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 9, 2011 at 6:22 pm

What is the best way to persuade people to stop wasting water?

My message is not to lose your friend’s because when you get older they will be very important to you and not to fight over liitle things. I did this with Johan because we have the same message. My idea for visual communication is making a powerpoint with a nice design.I will try and put something relevnt to my subject on the floor to show what I am doing.I will also make a poster with some facts on it. I am thinking of making video’s showing what I learned and one of the video’s will have friend’s fighting but it will be real and they wouldn’t know I took a video.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 9, 2011 at 6:23 pm

That is too many forms of visual communication. What way would be best to get your message across?

  13. Odette
    March 9, 2011 at 10:18 am

My message is “Make the most of your opportunities”. My idea for visual communication is by a powerpoint will show opportunities to learn pictures in each slide. Then Mr.Sam said that I should take photos at our school but I got fake photos from google so this is what I’m gonna do: I will ask some teachers, if I can take some pictures about students working so hard. If the teachers are not here at school mabye I can email them and if they say yes then I will say where there room is.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 9, 2011 at 6:26 pm

I am excited about you going and taking photos around school of students really making the most of their learning opportunities. You could use the photos to make some excellent posters.

My mesage is ‘try to be happy with who you are and be yourself’.

My idea for visual communication is to show the video. In the video, I’m interviewing my class about their happiness.

Are you only going to interview people in 6SS?

My message is to make NIST more natural.
My idea for visual communication is a 3D sculpture of a giant tree. It will be made out of paper Mache and most of it will be covered with concrete photos (photos of concrete) so it looks dull. Since Paula has the same topic as me we are making this together. The sculpture with be quite big. We might make the tree concrete but for now we are planning for it to be made out of paper Mache.

This sounds like an exciting project. Will it really get your message across?

My message is bullying hurts and you should treat others equally. My idea for visual communication is a poster.I choose to make a poster because i thought posters can atract others and posters are very poweful.I also choosed a poster because it can express my topic very well.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 9, 2011 at 6:30 pm

You could try an idea like the one used by JR in this video:

      Using Photography to Take Action

Imagine huge photos of people who have been bullied, or even people who have bullied others around the school!

My message is “Make NIST more Naturual”.

I am working with Sam because our topics are the same.

My idea for visiual communication is making a 3D sculpture from paper mache with grey pictures of concrete on it in a collage form.

I was inspired by my 3D calender which is also shaped as a tree.

My sculpture will be about up to my shoulder and I want it to be formed in the style of graphic design.

The colours of the tree will be different shades of grey.

I have also started thinking if it would be possible to make the tree out of actual concrete but I am not sure yet if it would work and how I would form it.

      March 9, 2011 at 6:31 pm

As I said to Sam, I like this idea as I think it would be very eye-catching. However, you do need to think about whether or not it will really get your message across.

My message is to help the transition students to NIST from other countries, their first language is not English.

My visual is a powerpoint about transition students and their experiences at NIST.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 9, 2011 at 6:32 pm

This is a good idea. You will need to make your PowerPoint very interesting by interviewing lots of students who have interesting stories to share.

My message is to be emotionally strong and not let others push your confidence. It is strong in the brain and also strong in the heart.

My idea for my visual communication is a superhero that is strong with a powerful brain and heart. My Josh talked about superhero so I get the idea of the ‘emotional strongness’ superhero to I identify the message. First I was having a superhero holding a brain which was holding weights; but it didn’t make sense. Then I made a superhero with a brain and a heart inside the body and the superhero’s arm lifting weight; and that was my final idea. I put most time in to that design because it identified my message best. I also had another design; one with a superhero, hand by his side and the brain was lifting weights. The other idea was instead of a head it was a brain but with to arms holding weights. For my current design I also added rays of lights on the heart and a brain for it to look more outstanding and eye catching. I could edit this lots more and improve it to make it more clear. I was focusing with weights and brains because it relates to being strong in a mental and emotional way.

      March 9, 2011 at 6:37 pm

I’m not sure the superhero is the best idea for you, Am. I think it suits Julien’s issue very well, but not yours. You may need to focus on the real heroes at NIST – the people who have the strength to believe in themselves. It could be very exciting to celebrate the achievements and the personalities of those people in the school. Let’s talk more about this tomorrow.

My messge that kids in this school and the heads of the school should value eating more. I can do this by making kids have a choice of eat for a longer time. I think most of year 4-5-6 kids will eat for longer because I surveyed 134 kids in year 4-5-6 and 123 of the kids said if there was more time to eat they would definly take it and 11 said they would not take it. I also want to make kids enjoy eating food an not just eat food because you have to. I am also planning to make the cafeteria less hectic and crazy by putting some calm music. I want to stop kids from eating fast because it causes diseases and stomach aches.

YOu have shared some great ideas with us – but you haven’t said anything about how you will communicate with your audience visually!

My idea for visual communication is displaying Positive and Negative things aobut screens such as computers. i got ideas from May and Am. May said that I should get a real life example like computers and then explain. Am said that I should talk about the negative and positive things about screens. At first I was going to do a sculpture but then mays idea popped up in my head so I used a real computer and I got some papers and wrote down somethings I planned to only 1-2 things and then explain the rest. Some reasons I didn’t write every thing because I can’t really think of a way to visualize some of them. I think that my work is relaly simple but I think that it is ok. and I will be able to explain it. I think tthat this is my first draft and I can do abit more better than this like I might need to make the words more clear and put in more details to make it more clear, simple and to the point. Alsoto make it more visual. I think that my friends have inspired me alot by giving me ideas and advices/suggestions which make me have ideas for my exhibition.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 9, 2011 at 6:41 pm

I like the “positive/negative” idea. Positive ways to use a computer and negative ways to use a computer. Positive times and negative times. Positive effects and negative effects. You could use two colours to represent positive and negative.

My message is that people at NIST should drink lot’s of water when they exercise. Also about the health of the water and whether it’s too cold or too warm. Also I want to have lot’s of scientific facts about water and how much a normal person should drink per day. I will find out by interviewing Ms. Jane, The nurse, Mr. Erik and I am going to interview a doctor and Mr.Julian. I have already interviewed Ms. Jane, Mr.Erik and the Nurse.

My idea for visual communication is a sculpture of Hydration man with a hole as it’s head to show that you can be Hydrate man by just drinking water when you exercise. I want to dress up first as a fat man with a cushion under my t-shirt, then I am going to drink water then disappear behind a black curtain. Behind the curtain I am going to take the cushions out and dress up as hydrate man with the help of Jon Jon.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 9, 2011 at 6:42 pm

I like the superhero idea, it’s cool. The cardboard cutout will be excellent… but not sure about changing from a fat person to Hydrate Man. Keep it simple!

This answer has nothing to do with this task. You really were away with the fairies today weren’t you?

    sounds good

My message it to know that friends are extremley important in life and you shouldn’t lose them beacuse of small things. While we are presenting in the exhibition I was thinking I could have a slide show going on beside me to raise awarness to the audience.
My idea for visual communication is making a powerpoint and designs and really showing your message in the powerpoint. I am also thinking of making some drawings/paintings to show my message a bit more clear. I might also make a video. I have done 4 surveys so far during the exhibition and I am thinking of putting all of the answers and facts into a poster and showing the different things happening around the school. I think that the NIST community will be quiet surprised by th answers.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 9, 2011 at 6:44 pm

Again… far too many forms of communication. Choose one and do it well, not many and do them badly!

  26. May
    March 9, 2011 at 10:26 am

My idea for visual communication is having positive and negative examples for being yourself my friend gave me some ideas of how to present it for good example I drew a picture that I want to not copy others so I being myself. My bad example is my friend drew a picture and I think that my drawing would be ugly so I copy my friend but when its time to present every one don’t like it so I’m regret cause if I didn’t copy my friend then every one might like my drawing 🙂

    • Mr. Sam
      March 9, 2011 at 6:46 pm

I liked your example very much, May. I think a lot of kids do this kind of thing all the time as they are afraid to use their own ideas. Your challenge will be to make sure people really understand what you’re trying to say.

  27. Shikhar Kapadia
    March 9, 2011 at 10:28 am

My message is geting an equal opportunit to show your talent, because I want everyone incuding me to be able to share their talent with the rest of the school.
Im also talking about things like other skills you get from your talent and if you get an oppurtunity to perform your talent in front of your school. Also if you don’t get a chanse to play in school or you can’t play in your country because nobody plays the sport or talent you have to move. If you really wan’t to do your sport or talent, because my talent is cricket and I can’t play it.

My idea for visual communication is a comic. I pretty much ended up drawing a comic about two boys! One wants to play cricket but the other doesn’t like him because he looks weird, so he doesn’t let him play. But actually he is very talented but the mean guy doesn’t let him play nationally. The next day he sees the weird guy playing cricket and he was phenomenal so the mean guy says “you are actually pretty good, sorry I didn’t let you play yesterday because by now you would be playing for India.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 9, 2011 at 6:48 pm

Your comic sounds a bit unrealistic. If you think these things are really happening in the school then your method of communication needs to be very realistic. You need to find real stories that back up what you are saying, and then create comics about those real stories, not made-up stories.
