I think Julien has a meaningfull connection with his issue, because has frequently problems related to not drinking enough water.
He has started to see different perspectives by talking to other students and teacher.
He explained the situation for elementary level and maybe should extend his research.

I agree. This is an issue that is very relevant to Julien and also to the NIST community. I’m sure he can really do something with this!

  3. Ms. Kyla and Jin
    March 4, 2011 at 1:13 pm

Jin has identified an issue that is meaningful to him. Bullying is a genuine problem that he faces everyday at school. He is bullied and, at times, he bullies others as a response to the situation. He knows that it affects him personally and would like to do something about it.

At the moment Jin is looking at bullying from a social playground situation.

Jin hasn’t yet looked at the current situation of bullying outside his social group but plans to do research.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 6, 2011 at 9:06 pm

This is a very serious issue and Jin will have the ability to find out some powerful information if he continues to inquire into it.

I feel that Johan has made a very meaningful connection with the issue he is talking about. He has described a situation at school that affects him and others and that has give him an interest to see how different situations effect happines.

Johan has made some interviews and the answers from the interviewes has made him want to know some other information about his issue which will give him a deeper understanding and to see the issue from another perspective.

Yes, JOhan has described the situation about the issue and I do think it is a very interersting issue to get deeper into.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 6, 2011 at 9:08 pm

I’m pleased that Johan is interested in this issue as it is very interesting. I wish I had been given the chance to think about “happiness” when I was Johan’s age!

  5. Kens Mom
    March 4, 2011 at 1:19 pm

I think he is still half way of this process but he takes care of the water at home also.He can find more ideas of this subject, and i want to help him.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 6, 2011 at 9:10 pm

This is an issue that is often chosen by students. The challenge for Ken will be to show that he really cares enough to do something about it. I hope he can do that!

  6. May's mom
    March 4, 2011 at 1:19 pm

I think May has made a meaningful connection with the issue she is talking about “Being Yourself”. She has interviewed a few people to get different perspectives. She seems to have a good understanding of what she is doing and will be doing.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 6, 2011 at 9:11 pm

This is a great issue for May to look into. As a student who is normally very quiet, it could be very empowering for her to learn more about confidence to “be yourself”.

Do you believe that the student has made a meaningful connection with the issue they are talking about?
    Yes.

Is the student starting to see the issue from different perspectives?
    Yes.

Has the student explained what the current situation is with their issue?
    Yes.

Wow. How about some explanations you two???

  8. Mik-Young
    March 4, 2011 at 1:20 pm

I think Yeachan totally understand what we are takling about and now he became more intrested in this issue. My other thought that we are all deserved to respect. That’s why it is important to care other’s feeling.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 6, 2011 at 9:14 pm

YeaChan is a sensitive person and this issue really means something to him. The challenge will now be for him to use his English now that it has improved so much.

  9. Dolly (Anirudh's mom)
    March 4, 2011 at 1:23 pm

    1. Anirudh has definitely made a connection with the issue of how car pool can help to reduce pollution.
    2. I think most people agree with the basic concept.
    3. Yes he did.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 6, 2011 at 9:17 pm

He does seem to care about this issue. It will be interesting to see if Anirudh has the determination and commitment to really challenge the NIST community to think about the amount of traffic we create twice a day.

I watched Aayush’s presentation with interest and was a little surprised by his choice of topic. However after listening to his views I am quite convinced that this is a topic that he strongly cares about. He also recognizes that it’s a topic that affects him personally too.
After collecting some data at the cafeteria and the interviews, he is beginning to see a more complete picture. I do feel that this is the beginning, and as he collects more information, analyzes the data and draws inferences from it, he will develop his theories further.
Aayush has explained the current situation in the cafeteria, but his data is based on observations for one-day. I just think that he will understand the current situation better as he observes more and thinks more about the issues at hand.
    A great interesting beginning!!

    • Mr. Sam
      March 6, 2011 at 9:19 pm

I’m pleased with his choice too. You’re right, he now needs to get a great deal more data and then back up his observations with good research.

  11. 18saeyeono
    March 4, 2011 at 1:24 pm

Saeyeon got 2 issues. Friendship and water. At the first issue, he explained the importance of friendship and way to obtain it. He thought humor is the most important to makk friends, but his father thought ‘smart’ instead of it. There has been some dicuss.
The 2nd issue is water. I understood well rack of water on the earth. We talked about the way of conserving water, and thought the way of making water. Spesially in Africa, we need to dig well or boil sea water or make dams some more. That was our result.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 6, 2011 at 9:20 pm

Next step for SaeYeon – make a decision about what to focus on!

  12. Mr Adrian
    March 4, 2011 at 1:29 pm

    1. Yes, definately and very well.
    2. Yes,nto the and from others’ too.
    3. Yes and she has also researched abput others’ feelings and deeper into the community too. Now her goal is to go i yes and research deeper too. Now her goal is to go into the secondary school community.

    March 4, 2011 at 1:36 pm

I think that Michael understands hat he is talking about. I think that Michael made a good connection with what he was talking about. I think that he saw his issue with different perspectives. I think that Michael did a good job.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 6, 2011 at 9:21 pm

Thanks for being there for Michael, MiKyoung.

Paul has made a meaningful connection with his issue as to exploring the sources of happiness and sadness. He has discovered already that having a lot material wealth does not determine who is happy and who is not. So that there are many elements that are more important than this for happiness. He has already noted that at NIST greater happiness leads to more confidence and greater ability to learn. And to enjoy the world around them.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 6, 2011 at 9:23 pm

I’m excited about Paul’s decision too. This is the kind of issue that Paul can really get his teeth into. I hope he can use his talents to great effect, but he will also need to manage his time much better than usual!

Do you believe that the student has made a meaningful connection with the issue they are talking about?
Yes…because it’s the issue Am has concern right now and we always talk about this.

Is the student starting to see the issue from different perspectives?
I believe so from the information Am showed me.

Has the student explained what the current situation is with their issue?
Yes and she needs to do more research on this.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 6, 2011 at 9:24 pm

The issue is “being strong” am I right?

  16. shilpa(shikhar mom)
    March 4, 2011 at 1:41 pm

I believe Shikhar has made connection with the issue…because he is realizing how empowering it is to pursue his passion for cricket that can help him change his life as well as life of people around him….& make a DIFFERENCE.

ABSOLUTELY he is starting think about various aspects…like..Physical fitness…focus n concentration…team building & various skills that he & students around him can acquire through medium of cricket..which can help them in various aspects & situations in life.

Yes he is in the process of studying the current situation.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 6, 2011 at 9:25 pm

Shiku’s really going to have to “help” the NIST community that his work on the subject of Cricket is actually a much deeper inquiry into fulfillment and the pursuit of our talents and passions!

    March 4, 2011 at 1:44 pm

    * Do you believe that the student has made a meaningful connection with the issue they are talking about?
Yes, we think Paula has made several connections with the subject of “greenery” and nature, however, we are still curious how she will find a way to make an actual difference.

    * Is the student starting to see the issue from different perspectives?
Yes, Paula has named several examples of the mentioned subject and has thought about what can be done about it. She also picked the subject “greenery” even though “bullies” was more popular in her survey.

    * Has the student explained what the current situation is with their issue?
Yes, she has explained about it in general but we still want to know what she means in specific as the topic was very “general”. Already a good direction! Looking forward to the solution finding process or potential particular action points.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 6, 2011 at 9:27 pm

I’m also curious to see where Paula is taking this. Obviously, it is going to be hard for her to start on something sustainable here at NIST as she’s moving to Japan. I guess Paula will need to show us that the things she is learning are really becoming part of who she is. I’ve also asked her to think about contacting her new school and discussing the issue with people there.

        Nice work, Am!

  19. Mr. Shem (Pimboon)
    March 4, 2011 at 1:51 pm

Me and Mr. Shem talked about can I change people’s minds? Then we talked about whose minds to change, if I could change some. We also talked about if I was going to change their minds, how would I do it, we thought that I should understand their perspective, and try to put myself in their shoes, then come up with some reasonable arguements. We also talked about what the connection between me and my issue is.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 6, 2011 at 9:29 pm

This sounds like a very helpful conversation.

I believe that Nine understands well of what he’s doing but he still cannot make decision on which topic he would like to do, between friendship vs. shark.

After listening to Nine’s perspective, I believe he knows what he’s doing and he agrees that he may need to find in depth information in the topic he would like to do.

    March 4, 2011 at 2:01 pm

    我认为调查得很好,了解了孩子们的快乐与不快乐,我们可以通过这些问题看到我们因该,怎么去做,进一步了解孩子。
    We used the google translation.
I think the investigation was very well, understand the children’s happiness and unhappiness, we can see us through these issues because of the, how to do it to learn more about children.

    • Mr. Sam
      March 6, 2011 at 9:30 pm

I love the way used the translation – very smart!

This is a serious issue for Terrie as she is very sensitive and interested in how to be more happy and the things that affect our happiness.
