Homework: Research Skills

The Exhibition will be upon us all soon. Yahoo! I’m really looking forward to see where inquiry will take you…To help you along with the vast amounts of text you will be exposed to and the need to synthesise all this, for homework this week, we’d like you to return to the BBC Skillswise site and hone those skim and scan skills!. Try another level that you mightn’t have felt confident trying this time…

Here’s the link…

Make a comment to tell us what you did, what you found difficult, what you found easy and what you need more practice on.

  1. January 19, 2011 at 3:40 pm

For the skimming test I got 8 over 10 and for the scanning test I got 4 over 10 quite sad for scanning test and I know that. So what I found easy is the skimming test and the difficult one is scanning test. I really want to practice more on scanning.

Are there more scanning tests that you can do to practice?

For Scanning I have done level C (quiz). I got 8 out of 10.
I did number 2 and 10 wrong I think that it was a good thing to do but it was quite hard because there were many words that I don’t know like: Clostridium botulinum, Botulinum clostridium, botulism, Atrophy, botulinum toxin. These are some of the words i don’t understand in the level C. But if you Scan it properly it tells you the definition. The thing that was easy was the first few paragraphs in the story and the first few questions. I think that the last few paragraphs in the story got quite deep and was quite hard to understand but if you scan it maybe 2 times it would actually make sense. So I think that it made you scan it first then it got harder and harder for you to scan even more and get interested with it. So I think it was good fun.
For Skimming I also did level C (quiz). I got 8 out of 10.
I did number 5 and number 9 wrong. I think that it was kind of easy for me. But I had to skim many times and it was quite confusing. So I think that you actually have to skim and scan in this one because if you just skimmed it won’t really make sense. I think that this one was quite easy I just got messed up with skimming. I think I kind of need to improve my skimming abit because its quite confusing if you skim and people oftenly is gooder at scanning more than skimming I think that that is because scanning is much more easier because if you skim you might have to skim it many times. Scanning makes it more clear and more easier to understand. So as I said the skimming story is more easier but I got messed up because I skimmed it many times and it was actually confusing. The story is also really interesting. But in the end it kept us hanging abit. 🙂 😀 😛 😉

      For skimming:
I understanded all the words and it was kinda fun doing it as Homework cause you don’t get stressed. 😀

Yeah because you can think of it and play it over again. unlike normal homework (no offense)

        January 19, 2011 at 5:15 pm

I also agree Pin because you read all the text and you don’t have to look for a specific topic and wasting time but just skim on and we will know. For scanning its stressing becuase you’re like ‘oh were is that information about the topic I need!’ but for skimming its like: ‘okay, read on and understand’. 😉

for the skimming test I got 7 out of 10 and for the scanning test I got 6 out of 10. I think I need to work a little bit on both because If I dont I wont be able to read text quickly to find the information I need.

Those scores are not bad though. Where did you make mistakes?

I did some lessons on skimming and scanning and I think I got a lot better. I skimmed and scanned 5 sheets of stories and I think it was quite easy as I got to the end I think Skimming is better then scanning. Scanning is more of a challenge. I think this will help me a lot in the exhibition and i will be able to read loads of text in about 5 minutes!

In the Skimming one i Did A coures and i got 9/10
    I did sSkimming 1more time on level B and i got 5/10

In the Scaning ony i did A coures and i got 10/10
    I did Scanning 1more time on level B and i got 10/10

I think you need to do the more difficult levels next.

    January 19, 2011 at 4:51 pm

For scanning I have done level B and I have got all correct but I tried many times. I reset it many times because the time outs fast. and I am going to do skiming now.

    January 19, 2011 at 5:02 pm

I got all corect in scanning but i got to reset the page because the time goes 8 minnutes and it’s fast for me! I have got 5 out of 10 and for meit was hard I did b on scanning I did b on skiming.

To tune in back to scanning, I went to read the scanning factsheet again. I did the quiz on the easiest level first, just to get in the mood. I did it because I wanted to get back into really scanning so it was just to get back in the mood. It was easy and I got all correct. I did the level C quiz-the hardest level an I got 1 wrong. I scanned a lot over and over again and it was to be honest quite difficult because there were many words I didn’t know and the quiz was about botox which I didnt know what it even meant! The trick I did was to look at the answers and scan relevant text by looking at the text under related titles and see which answer is in there. I think I have got a lot better in scanning because normally I wouldn’t really understand anything when scanning but now I scan and re-scan sometimes to get at least the idea of what the text is saying or reffering to. I have learnt new teqniques and before I thought scanning was skimming which is looking at the overall text but very quickly and let your eyes flow.

I also went to read the factsheet for skimming too just to get the idea and get back to the mood. Again I did the easiest level of the quiz and it was very, very easy. I got al correcct. Then I did the level C quiz and to be honest it was easy. A lot easier than scanning test but when I was on question 8, there was this thing that came up saying: ‘sorry the time is up. Click ok to quit and click cancel to continue’. I clicked cancel because I wanted to see my results of the overall test though I was over ther time. I enjoyed it though I got question 9 wrong because I wasn’t sure of the answer and there were 2 answers thatw ere similar so I was mistaken.

So in conclusion, I think I need a bit of practice more on scanning and really finding a topic to scan about so I can really get it. I am really in skimming because I feel confident in doing it and I have done it before by skimming some text in my book when I don’t understand.

Mr.Sam when I click on the page it goes there but then I can’t click on it I tried doing from the internet but still the same problem.

For scanning, I did the Quiz, level B. I didn’t do level A because I did it before and I didn’t do level C because level B was very confusing, complicated and kind of hard and the chart they gave us didn’t make any sense to me. So I didn’t do level C because I figured out that it would be even more confusing. I got 5 out of 10 in level B, because it was disorient and I half guessed the answers combined with thinking. I think I need more practicing on reading different types of charts, because as you know, I had no idea what the chart showed me. To be honest, I didn’t find anything easy on level B except for maybe the first and second question was the only questions that I could answer immediately. And yeah, what I found difficult was most of the things.

For skimming, I also did the Quiz, level C because I did level A before and I also did level B before. This level was 3 quarters easy, because I like skimming more that scanning and I do it a lot more. I did the quiz under 4 minutes and I did everything immediatly. I don’t know how to explain. I can just do it and I didn’t find anything quite difficult. I only got confused when they offered true or false because…I don’t know. I got 8 out of 10, because I stumbled on the true or false questions. I think I need more practice on making my skimming more accurate, and making it more clear.

I did Scanning level C and Skimming level C. I got both 90 per cent and I am really frustrated because to be honest, I think that I rush too much and don’t even skim. I think that I need to work more on skim and scan.

I need to add a bit more information on my comment:

What I found hard was reading properly because as you see I rush too much and I think that I don’t even read properly. The easy thing was that most of the questions were really easy and I just passed them really easily. What I need to pratice on is that I need to read more carefully and collect important information.

For the scanning test level B I got 8/10. I wasn’t satisfied at my result but I checked my result one more time. The difficult thing was I had to answer at 8 minutes. The easy thing was easy question like ‘When does the 11 o’clock bus arrive’.

For the skimming test level B I got also 8/10 It was more difficult than scanning.
The difficult thing was I had to read long sentences and answer in 3 minutes.

I played the ‘Who killed Angela?’ game. What I found really hard was that you had limited time to look at all the clues and decide who killed Angela. I found it very stressing. What was easy was when you was the part were they ask you questions after you scanned the piece of text. I think I could get better at keeping myself calm even though I am under stress because of you limited time.

For Skannng I got 9/10 (level A) I also tried level B a I didn’t finish it all. For Skimming I also got 9/10 level A. I did try level B but I got 4/10. I think that it was quite complicated for Skanning level B because I don’t really get the chart, so I tried it one more time I got 7/10 I think it’s because I understand it a bit more. I think that it was kind of hard for me in skimming level B because there’s lot’s of words and I’m also worried that the time’ going to be up because I finish. I tried level B 2 times and the second time I fot 5/10. I found that level A is the easiest for me because I can understand it. I think that I have to work one Level B more.

I did the quiz and I did level 1,2,3 I got 60% right on level 1 80% right on level 2 and 50% right on level 3 I think I am doing good on skimming.

For scanning I got 10/10 on level a but on be I got 8/10. On the skimming it went better where I got 10/10 and 9/10. This will really help me at exhibition beacause if I need more information and I don’t have that much time I can just skim and scan through the text. Though I noticed that when I am skimming and scanning I rush to much and get the words wrong.

I read the Factsheet for Scanning and I printed the worksheets and worked on them then I stuck it in my Homework Book.

I also read all the Factsheets and Worksheets for Facts and Opinions but I didn’t do the Factsheet.
The Factsheets I liked best from all the four Factsheets were Factsheet 1 and Factsheet 2. I liked these best because they were the most interesting because I was surprised by that Indian people are the worlds biggest readers and the article about them was very interesting with lots of surveys about how much people read in other countries. Apparently Indians are reading 10.7 hours a week and Britons and Americans read 50% less than that and Japanese and Koreans read less than 4.1 or 3.1 hours a week.

I didn’t do any more than that because I was already doing Homework for more than 1 hour excluding world languages Homework luckily my brain didn’t explode and I was still motivated and enthusiastic after that hour and wanted to continue and do more.

    For skimming I got 10/10 level A but for B I got 5/10. For scanning I got 6/10 Level A and B I got 2/10.

I found Easier skimming level A because it was simple and easy. I found hard scanning level B hard because I did not understand sometimes and it took me allot of time to do it. I need more practice on scanning.

    For Skimming I got 6/10 on B

    For scanning I got 5/10 on B

I found that scanning level B was quite hard.

    • Mr. Sam
      January 19, 2011 at 8:26 pm

Why was it hard? Can you explain?

  22. 18Aayushk
    January 19, 2011 at 7:44 pm

I first did B level in Scanning and I got 8/10 because I did not have time to finish the last 2 qustians. Then I did scanning level “C” and I got 8/10 again but this time I got 2 mistakes and I did it in 2 minutes. I honesly find scanning quite diffucult because some times when I am scanning I can’t find the word because sometimes I skip a line. So I found that quite difficult.
Next I did Skimming level “B” and I got 9/10, Also I did level “C” on skimming and I got 9/10 but I saw a couple of difficult words like Atrophy. I found skimming quite easy for some reason.

So in the end I think I need more work on scanning.

  23. 18Manishas
    January 19, 2011 at 7:59 pm

For skimming i got 7 out of 10 and for scanning i got 8 out of 10.
I think i should work more on skimming and scanning because alot of time i read the whole article and then answer the question that will not help me in the exibition.

    • Mr. Sam

For Scanning I did the first quiz (level A). I got 90%, I think I ded really well. The question I got wrong was question or statment number 9(The metal-action sofa-bed is wider than the 2 seater sofa True or False?). I did this quiz again and got the same scores and did the same mistake. I finally got 100% on my third go. So basiclly, the whole scanning quiz (level A)was easy but I had trouble with the same quuestion (The metal-action sofa-bed is wider than the 2 seater sofa. True or False?)
Also for Scanning I tried the 2nd quiz (Level B). I didn’t get it at all! It looked confusing but I tried my best and got the score of 70% which is really good! At least 2 of the questions I guessed because it was so confusing!
For Skimming I the first quiz (Level A). I got the score of 80%, It didn’t look so hard but I still got only 80% right. The question I got wrong was question number 3 (Which category of video isn’t listed?) and question number 5 (This text tells you where to get more information about how many items you can borrow from the library. True or False?). I did this same quiz again and got 100% because I memorized the answers.

    January 19, 2011 at 8:44 pm

For scanning for each level I got:

I had trouble in the test B because it was quite confusing and I hate timestable. At least I got a better grade in Test C because I read through that really well and in Test B there weren’t much time there were in Test C. What I need to do is read more carefully.

    For Skimming:

The test B was really hard for me because there were information that I thought were quite difficult to understand and it was absolutely out of the question to understand the information. What I need to do is read more carefully and do my best.
