Pierre from Keen Media did a presentation for us today on the subject of design. He used a number of visuals to tell us the story of design and to show some designs that have been important in the world. He showed us examples of architecture, product design, logos, typefaces and posters. Here’s some of the most powerful things I thought Pierre said, with some questions for you to answer tonight:

“Behind every product is a team of designers who make it good to look at, lovely to touch and easy to use.”

What products do you think have the best design?

“Innovation can change the world.”

What does “innovation” mean? What examples of innovations changing the world do you know about?

“I want my brain to be like a sponge”

What does Pierre mean by this? Is your brain like a sponge? How do you know?

Homework: Bring some “real-world” examples

November 29, 2010 34 comments

Find some real-world examples of the kind of writing you have chosen to do and bring them to school.

So, if you are writing a review then you need to find some examples of real reviews and bring them to school. We will use the examples to learn about the features of different types of writing.

You could bring some books, newspapers, magazines, print-outs, leaflets, brochures etc…

Make a comment on here to tell us what examples you will bring tomorrow and where you found them.

What will we write? Form.

You have all made choices about what you’re inspired to write about:

Now, you are making choices about what you will write, what you will produce, what your final product will be. Choosing exactly what you will write is  a limitation because it gives you a focus:

Now you need to make sure you understand what a “real-life” example of these things is like. What is a newspaper or magazine like? What does it look like? What is the language like? What is the layout? What are the features?

Make a comment to tell us some information about the form of the type of writing you would like to do.

The 6SS Shaved Head Heroes

November 29, 2010 3 comments

These 6SS, and ex-6SS, boys really impressed everyone on Friday by joining in with Movember and having their heads shaved. They can’t grow a ‘mo yet so shaving their heads was the next, best thing! So far, these guys have earned 15,000 baht in sponsorship money to go along with the money raised by teachers in the school. Well done guys, you are heroes. And, you’re more streamlined now too!
