Homework: Ms. Ashley

Ms. Ashley visited 6SS today to talk about a few things. The main things were:

  • How to help new students feel welcome at NIST
  • What Ms. Ashley does every day in her job at NIST

Can you make some comments to tell us what you know about either of these things? You can summarize what people said today and you could also come up with some new ideas!

6SS – it was great to talk with you today! I was impressed with all of the ideas you had to help students (and adults!) who are new to our NIST community. Many of us know what it feels like to move to a new school and we can all take action to help support people as they settle in to life at NIST and in Bangkok.

We can help the new students by showing them around the school. We can also help them by being their friends so they can feel comfortable and not being left out.

If there is a new student you should show them whick ways are to classes and what kinds of different places they can go to at lunch. If the person has meal plan you should show them how the system works.
Last year Terrie was new and couldn’t really speak English. Me, Paula and two other girls in 6GD showed her around at lunch. The place she usually liked was the library because there she could read books in Chinese so that is where we saw her stay everyday.

Ms. Ashley is the counselor of the years 5-6. When people have problems with their family or friends and they can’t solve it themselves they usually go to Ms. Ashley.
Last year Ms. Ashley hosted HKP (Helping Kids Problems). The people in HKP would walk around shcool in red aprons/bibs and look to see if anyone was lonely or was having a problem. The years 5-6 were allowed to sign-up if they wanted to be in HKP. Paula and I were one of the twenty students picked last year. We would try to help peoples problems 1 Lunchtime a week.

    1. We can help by taking them around school
    2. People feel more comfortable by talking, so we can also talk to the new students and get to know them better
    3. We can make sure that if they do not have anyone to play with, we can let them play with us

The job of Ms. Ashley’s is that she can solve problems magically. If anyone’s new, the new students can go to Ms. Ashley with someone also or not, and the new student can introduce herself or himself to her. If you have any problems, you can just go to Ms. Ashley and she will solve it for you.

Great comments 6SS! Some of you have said that if you have a problem and come to me that I will “solve it for you.” Sometimes an adult does need to help a student solve a problem – but if I’m really doing my job right I’ll be teaching YOU how to solve your own problems! Dealing with our problems, in healthy ways, is a life skill that we all need to learn and carry with us throughout our entire lives. So yes, I’m definitely here to help you when you have a problem. But hopefully, most of the time, I can guide you to use the skills you’re learning to solve the problems (or at least deal with them in a healthy way) on your own, but with support. Isn’t growing up fun?
