Homework: Reflections on Society

Inevitables connexions by batega.

What are the “Key Connections” between your issue and society? Try and answer the following questions in as much detail as possible. Think back to all the conversations and thinking you did today.

Impact of your issue on society

What is the impact of your issue on society? What problems is your issue causing to the society you live in? What effect is your issue going to have on the future of the society you live in?

Impact of society on your issue

What is the impact of society on your issue? What is society doing that is making your issue worse? Is society doing anything to make your issue better? Could the solutions to your issue come from society?

Society and your exhibition

How can you use the Society lens of the Compass in your exhibition to:

  • gather information
  • get ideas
  • collect data
  • understand behaviour
  • present your information
  • get people to “re:think”
  • start finding solutions to the issue

I think that the impact of societies on my issue is that societies are polluting the ocean/sea that have fish that we eat and so the societies (us) aren’t only killing sea life but our selves. Also it’s the same with beaches/seas/oceans because our pollutants are going into the ocean and its our fault in the future when we can’t swim in the ocean or eat sea animals. I know that some societies do try to slow down some of the pollution that goes into the ocean, they go scuba diving and take trash out of the ocean. Project Aware, PADI and many other places are doing this to help. I think that if societies work together they could be part of my solution because if someone is cooradainating and is accountable for results at a senior governmet level they can manage down to each local area to work to insure a cleaner and healther environment which should result to less rubbish in the ocean. This means there has to be process and policing of the rules, compared to todays low standards.

Yes, you’re right. You’re next step is you really need to get hold of the facts about how our society has an impact on the seas and oceans of Thailand and then help us to reduce the pollution that we produce.

My Issue on Society: Its mean, cruel, stressful, scary, a big problem, trouble, having sleepless nights and mental torture can be involved. And that isnt right because it can make your health worse.

Society on my Issue: Society creates the problem for my issue because poeple are bullied because of their culture and that is 100% wrong.

Wow. Once again, Ranvir, you amaze me with your lack of effort. Let me make this easier for you by copying and pasting ALL the questions you did not answer and the instructions you ignored:

Society on my Issue: If there was no society there would be no cyber bullying because there would be noone to bully.
Also the more society there is the more options there are to bully. More ways society makes cyber bullying worse is that the more people that can bully you (A.K.A more bullies).
How society could be a solution is that more people live there which means the chance that you get bullied is smaller, the more people there are to help you and the other people might of gotten cyber bulied before so then they can help you in a better way.
The society lens can help me by getting a balanced presentation not only from economy or nature, etc.

      Hi Luca,

What makes members of a society cyber-bully other members of a society?

What do societies normally create in order to protect their members?

The impact of my issue on society is:
    Water is a vital resource
You are practically made out of water
There would be no life on Earth
Because of how much water being wasted at the moment it effect everyone, cultures, religions, communities and yourself.
Water is being used for unnecessary purposes
Water is not being used wisely

The impact of society on my issue is:
People keep on polluting the water that we have
People don’t care about the scarcity of water in the Earth.
Some people around the world might care about this problem but they can’t bother to do anything about it and unless people change and take action then there will be no difference this will continue happening.
There are cultural things that pollute and waste water for e.g in Loy Krathong it is a day where you say sorry for all the bad things you’ve done to the river and while you are saying sorry you are STILL polluting it.
People should re:think about how much water is used in a day
People are using too much water maybe because some kids think that water is magically put into Earth.
    People are using water uselessly
Its not fair for people who don’t have water, while that person is using water madly

My Issue dosn’t realy effect society unless you think that people wont meet and stuff near beggars. Maybe it would affect the society by not many people will meet or celebrate thier culture. Everybody wont come out with thier friends.

Culture racism might cause beggars to beg. When people want more places to celebrate thier culture and meeting places so they might have to destroy beggars houses. Im not so sure on the third one.Maybe(for the last one).

My plastic bag issue has an impact on society. When plastic bags are thrown away/gotten rid of, they go to places which harm the planet’s nature beauty. For example, Oceans, Dumps and Green areas. We are the ones that are destroying our environment and our living grounds. Most of our plastic bags are being thrown anyway on the streets, or even just in the garbage can. If this issue keeps on happening and no one takes action than our lovely society will turn into something no one has ever imagined. Our local areas, our society will be something that we don’t think is being affected by the things we are doing that isn’t good like using too many plastic bags and littering them.

We, humans are the ones creating this problem and if it keeps on happening than there is no chance of us taking back of what we did when it’s too late. Many people just use plastic bags because it’s convenient for them to just carry it around instead of bringing their own cloth bags in. No one really wants to step out of their comfort zone even just for a small change in their lives that could do a lot for their lives. If everyone starts realizing the terrifying facts about plastic bags than there might be a chance of everyone agreeing and working together to make the real change happen. Some people are starting to realize and make a difference but the real big difference would happen if we all worked together. Solutions should be coming from society because society is the main reason everyone is using plastic bags. And society (all of us) should be the ones to solve this. Everyone works together everything goes right. We will all have happy lives at the end and a beautiful Thailand as well if we realize and solve.

What kind of solutions could society offer to this problem?

    My issue on Society:
I think animals are also have their own life, but people killing them. I think they killing them seleves. Because we have life and animals have life(I said right now) but we killing them. So I means like we killing themselves and take their skin.(Do you understand I mean?)
    Society on my Issue:
I think if some people who really care about endangered animals and they want to stop hunting animals, but the other people keep hunting endangered animals. If people who want to stop hunting can persuade to the other people, then hunting is stops. But if they can’t, then animals are get less and less… At the end animals are all(?) dyiing out…(I guessing)

I don’t know if it is connected to society because I still don’t really get the understanding of society. But I THINK it is kind of connected because we are distroying the air. We are makiing this dirty air and we are the ones that want clean air. This problem will make us sick and make us have other things…

The impact and the problems of the plastic bags on the society that we live in is surely there because plastic bags are very popular with both retailers as well as consumers because they are cheap, strong, lightweight, functional, as well as a hygienic means of carrying food as well as other goods. Even though they are one of the modern conveniences that we seem to be unable to do without, they are responsible for causing pollution, killing wildlife, and using up the precious resources of the earth.

The effect that the plastic bags will have on the future of the society is that the single-use plastic bags have become such a far and wide way of life that it seems as if we simply cannot do without them. However, if we have the will, we can start reducing their use in small ways. A tote bag can make a good substitute for holding the shopping. Recycling the plastic bags you already have is another good idea. These can come into use for various purposes, like holding your garbage, instead of purchasing new ones. While governments may be working out ways to lessen the impact of plastic bags on the environment, however, each of us should shoulder some of the responsibility for this problem, which eventually harms us.
“Our future is held in our hands, we humans can make a difference.”

    Society on my issue:
I think that society is having a pretty bad impact on my issue because most of the people in the neighbouring buildings and in my building are wasting a lot of electricity. People don’t seem to realize the seriousness of my issue.

    Issue on society:
My issue does not seem to effect society yet.

    Solutions society could offer:
One of the solutions society could offer is eduacating the children more wisely in schools by helping them become more aware of what is happening around them. People could form organisations that only work towards my issue. The goverment could help us a lot by taking this issue seriously to the masses and and send us experts to eduacate people. They could increase the price per watt so people feel the pinch of over using electricity.

I can gather inforamtion by conducting surveys. I can also understand the behaviour of the society that I live in by conductiong surveys as well. This can also help me for presenting info because I can get a balanced understanding of what people think and feel about my issue.

My issue effects society in complicated ways but simple ways as well like 400 million people on face book is a society it can be very good or very bad. But how internet safety effects the society is hard. Internet safety effects society in a good way because it keeps all the people safe when they are online. But it can be bad because you have control over your privacy settings and you have to think about who you share your info with so it is about the trust that you give your self or other people give you. You also need to think about if you did something on the online world would you do it in real life. Well society makes it bigger so the need for good privacy settings is needed and this is bad for peoples help because the more that people that sign up for these websites the more space is needed for server farms and sever farms use a lot of vital resources so that means that the society will be affected badly. I could use all the information that I collected about my subject and society and turn it into an infographix like the pingdom people did. I could also email the pingdom people and ask if I can you their infographix for my presentation.

When electricity is produced, smoke and chemicals comes out from the power plant. It contributes to climate change and global warming. Many websites I have searched on shows that climate change sometimes makes natural disaters. Then homes and habitats for people will be destroyed. For the future, sea level can rise higher and many places will be flooded.
Another impact is when smoke is released from the power plant it causes more air pollution which makes people sick and the air not clean.
When power plants are built, it takes a lot of space and millions of people have to move out to other places. Many people in my soicety saves electricity to save money. My places use too much lighting for deacoration which isn’t needed. It wastes too much electricity. It is sometimes used for religious celebrations, beliefs, hobbies etc. The guards and some of my neighbours save electricity to help improve the environment for the future and it saves money. Some solutions can be to educate the society ways to save electricity and the impacts to the future and the enivronment.

Society and culture has a lot of things to do with my issue.

    Society on my issue:

Some people like to buy imported food because they look cool. People don’t really buy food from local farmers because they’re cheap and people think its bad. Also urbanization makes farmers go to cities to find jobs which leaves a less amount of farmers so the farmers that are left need to produce more and the only way is fertilizers and pesticides. Even though that produces more the price for the equipment is expensive and it is also bad for the enivronment. Still traditional cultures of farming includes eco-friendly methods

    My issue on society:

My issue helps my community make better choices and teach them ways to save the environment easily also it makes them realize about this issue.

      Just to add on,

My family is pretty bad on this issue because nobody execpt me and my mum care about this issue. Everybody else doesn’t really care about this issue.

    Here’s my answer,

My issue affects society because people who are poor and fish in a sustainable way to earn money. A lot of people buy this fish fresh from fishermen. These people aren’t guilty of buying fish from an unsustainable source. If we don’t stop fishing the way we are fishing then we might run out of fish. Fish is a natural pain killer for people with arthritis. So if we run out of fish, we run out of natural painkillers for arthritis.

Some people who aren’t aware of this problem buy fish from an unsustainable source without even knowing how their fish is caught. This makes the problem worse for this encourages people to commercial fish with trawlers or any thing that involves lots of by-catch. That is only the problem from the society but the solution could also be from society. If people started buying from sustainable sources like ASEAN then the unsustainable fish catching companies would sell out. No demand, no supply.

To gather information and collect data from the society I could email them or just go and talk to them. To make people re:think I could-
    Scare them
    Educate them
    Persuade them
To understand behavior I could interview them by talking so I understand their thoughts and feeling about my issue more.

    socitey in my issue

I think we are stuiped enouh to kill our selves. I mean why does people live with freedom and their own lives? but why not animals because animals has life it’s own they are liveing cretures. In this earth same as us. It will be better people don’t hunt them before they become exicnt .soictey is about your life how your liveing
    My issue on society
my issue helps to make a better place for animals and stop hunting, buying, selling eating them and people to rethink

  18. April 20, 2010 at 8:29 pm

I think my issue air pollution has an impact on society because you can get asthma, bronchitis etc. In the future I think many people in our society would die from the bad air they are breathing in and have really bad lungs. Societies could have an impact on my issue because of showing off there wealth with a car and driving it around. I think society could be the solution.

*) I don’t quite know how the society lens can help me gather so much info
    2) maybe idea on why they have to show off by using a car
    3) Society you can go around interviewing people in your society
    4) Present it, in a way of the society perspective and our perspective and see if which one seems more true/better then teach the society

  19. Ping Ping
    April 20, 2010 at 8:29 pm

My society is definitely affecting the environment with the fact that many people around my community only cares of making money for their family don’t actually know what on earth what they are doing to the environment with spraying smoke or using PCs from a fossil fuel plant. This makes people’s lungs exposed to smoke since people are mostly outside and some people in a school next to my house to be affected by smoke directly. Someday, my society is going to use renewable energy or they are using to use energy from nuclear if the prime minister creates more nuclear power plants.

The society can create massive impact since if just 1 person in the society does something, others will follow. So if I use renewable energy, people in my society will use renewable energy. My society is used to closing the lights when they are supposed to and when to close electronics. My society is using electricity when they really need to so that is being eco-friendly on the long term.

What I could do with the lens of society in terms of presenting:

    1. I could make a movie that is video taken from many people as a society.
    2. A community website

Female rights has a good impact it’s the way we should be if we all were equal the world would probably be a better place well at least be in a better state then it is now because males and females have different ideas and when you put them together they normally turn out well. Societies need to be equal well everyone should have equal opportunities to take a step forward because everyone has a different perspective that’s what makes us interesting. Men always have there friends but women aren’t aloud to talk to men that they aren’t related to and men always end up sharing things and when societies start it becomes a bad impact everyone should be careful in what action we take because it could cause problems later. The Sikh society that I am in believe in the gurus and the only guru we have left is the Guru Granth Sahib Ji and most Sikhs believe in it and the good things that does happen it also sometimes inspire people because things sometimes get around quicker in societies.
To change people I will need to change there society and to do that I should present my work towards them ask them why the act this way does it say in there Holy Book if not why do they do it because I know in my religion it says we should be equal but are all Sikhs actually give equal opportunities to each other when they believe in the gurus teachings?
If we all get equal opportunities the world will differently become a better place for us and the future generations that’s what I believe.
The society lens has made me think of big impacts I can make because the best way to start is with your society and that’s what I am planning to do. Societies mean a big group of people and if I share my information hopefully they will change their ways and make it better for them and the future to come.
