Advice from your Teacher – Part Two

Today we had a very interesting and powerful conversation about being open-minded. We needed to have the conversation after some very narrow-minded behaviour by a number of people when students were sharing their Pecha Kucha.

The main problem was boys who are silly about talking to, working with or playing with girls. And, girls who are silly about talking to, working with or playing with boys. There was some very pathetic and immature behaviour, quite honestly. Our conversation was all about the reasons for such behaviour by some people and not by other people.

We concluded that the key is “open-mindedness” and we decided that being open-minded is very important in order to be successful in work and in our social lives.

Let’s continue the conversation by making comments and replying to comments. Here are some things to think about:

  • What does being “open-minded” mean?
  • How do some people grow up to be open-minded?
  • How do some people grow up to be narrow-minded (the opposite)?
  • What examples of open-mindedness do you see every day?
  • What examples of narrow-mindedness do you see every day?
  • What good effects will open-mindedness have on people’s lives?
  • What bad effects will narrow-mindedness have on people’s lives?
  • How can being open-minded help you to be a better learner?
  • How can being narrow-minded stop you from learning?
  • How will being open-minded help you have a successful exhibition?
  • How will being narrow-minded stop you from having a successful exhibition?

Open-Mindedness and Narrow-Mindedness is something that you could tell between everyone. People who are Open-Minded are normally with many people that have a variety of girls and boys while Narrow-Minded people have little bit of friends of the same sex. Every grows more mature while they grow up and they can go the open-minded way or the narrow minded way. People who go the open-minded way will normally be taught from their parents that girls and boys are human and they will get along with everybody. Some girls can have some good ideas to share and as an effect of being open-minded, you could have a better group with color in your group. Being narrow-minded can make your group stay the same or stagnate since you be with the same people, with the same ideas and the same everything.

      Hi Ping Ping,

I agree with you about the fact that you can see who is open-minded and narrow-minded because the way you act reflects on who you are.

Open-minded in my words are to listen, take and see other people’s opinion not only yourself. I think to grow up open-minded you will need to start small like what I said before you will have to accept other peoples rights and opinion. People grow up to be narrow-minded because they always stick with the same old people and never move on, they always think their idea and opinion’s the best and once their friends that they depend on has moved on they are all alone no one to be with and they would wish they had accepted other people opinion. The examples I see everyday are friends inviting each other to play with each other and they are playing with a different people’s (gender). The example’s that I see of narrow-mindness people are (not to mention any names) some people on the football pitch and some people who hang around the Oval. The good effects of open-minded people are when their friends move on in life they would still be able to live happily or they would move on with their friends too. The bad effects of narrow-minded people are if their friends that they always stick with move on they don’t have anyone else to depend on and it may be hard to find a job because if you are good at one skill and your job is your skill and you have to work with a boy/girl and you don’t even know how to talk with someone your opposite gender you are BUSTED. Being open minded helps us be a better learner because if we are open minded we can help other people learn while learning more ourselves too. Being narrow minded can stop you from learning because if you never listen you other people’s idea which includes knowledge all you will know is what you already know. If you are open-minded and listen to other peoples idea’s and able to work with someone the opposite gender it will help becuase then you wouldn’t be wasting your time because you are able to work with a person the opposite gender and you can share and give ideas. “2 heads are better than 1.” How can being narrow minded stop you from having a successful exibition because you would waste your time because you don’t like working with someone the opposite gender and you will only put down your idea and maybe your partner knows more but you will only put your own things down which may make you and your partner look like they haven’t put much effort into it.

Open-Minded is a really good attidude. It means that you listen really carefully and accept people’s ideas. People grow up and be open-minded when they are already open-minded already or if somebody really cares and helps them be open–minded. Also because if you have situations where you need to be open-minded often you will soon learn to be open-minded. But some people they don’t learn and don’t want to learn to be open-minded and stagnate. When they grow up and things such as failure happen to them they will realize soon that they are narrow-minded. Some people don’t even realize until they’re adults! People that are open-minded will find that they are really successful in life when working. All jobs and everything in life require us to be open-minded. Being narrow-minded will give you failure in everything. There’s many example of people being narrow-minded such as the example Mr.Sam gave which is about the students watching 6SS’s Pecha Kucha. Being open-minded is really important during the exibition becuase we will be getting a lot of advice from people and we not to take the advice open-mindedly.

  4. Sujinna
    March 4, 2010 at 4:27 pm

I think that being open-minded means that you have to listen, share, take and also see other people’s opinions and ideas. People grow up to be open-minded by how their parents, teachers and relatives teach them and also by how other people act to them. I think that people grow up to be narrow-minded by their parents, teachers and relatives don’t spend time with them so when they grow up, they just don’t care and the natural thing about humans is that they don’t really do anything good unless someone taught them or showed them or they have seen it from someone close. I see open-mindedness everyday and I also see narrow-mindedness everyday too. The example for open-mindedness is that every time I come back home, my sister would have some problems or I would have some problems so we tell them to our parents and they will help us out by giving us advices. It shows open-mindedness because they are listening to you and they are sharing you the advices. The example for narrow-mindedness is that every time I try to remind a person, that person just don’t care about what I say and just roll their eyes at me. It shows narrow-mindedness because the person doesn’t listen and ignore what you are saying. Having open-mindedness can cause an effect on people’s lives but so do being narrow-minded. The example of the good effect that being open-minded is that sometimes you don’t want to keep things inside you, so you tell someone who you trust the story, problem which makes it that you don’t have to keep the whole story/problem by yourself, at least there is someone who knows the problem and at least can help you. The bad effect of being narrow-minded is that you don’t listen to people and like I said before, sometimes we just want to remind someone about something but they don’t listen to you. Sometimes, what you want to say is very important or urgent and they just ignore you so they miss the event or chance. Being open-minded helps you to be a better learner because when you are open-minded, you listen to more ideas and you know more, you get more experiences on different things and you get to know the different things that are happening or happened around the world. Being narrow-minded stops you from learning because you don’t listen to anyone so you don’t listen to what is happening in the world, what has happened around the world before. Part of being open-minded is that you need to communicate so if you are open-minded in the exhibition, you will communicate and share ideas and also cooperate which will make your work be done faster and also make it easier. Being narrow-minded will stop you from being successful in the exhibition because you won’t communicate that much so you won’t know what you have to do, you don’t do your share of the work because you again don’t know what to do, you just ignore what people say, which what other people say could be important information and you don’t record it down so you have to do it again which wastes your time.

      Hi Sujinna,

I agree with you that humans don’t really care unless someone tells them. It is true that it is the natural thing about humans. Do you have an example of you being open-minded or narrow-minded?

        March 4, 2010 at 5:04 pm

I once (actually more than once but this is the most easiest one to explain) was narrow-minded to a girl in our class because she keeps saying the same things over and over so I just ignored but then later she told me something very important so I just missed the event. I was open-minded when this group of girls had a problem and I was trying to give them advices so we could end the problem

    What open-minded means is:
A:You can share ideas with confidence, you can take a slap in the face and you can listen to other peoples ideas and think that each ideas is good instead of going “those ideas suck, my idea is the best”.
B:That you can talk to a girl and be around them and talk to them instead of only going boys.
Some people grow up being open-minded and become open-minded because:
A:There parents raised them to be able to talk to a girl and not only going with boys because you have to live life.
B:You grew up in a school/class that you always had to have mixed groups like 2 boys and 2 girls.
C:Because they don’t mind and they can get on with life and can get on with different types of people.
D:Because the boys/girls didn’t let that boy/girl play with them so the played with other left out boys/girls.
Some people grow up to be narrow minded because:
A:Their teachers let them be in a group with whoever they want to so boys always went with boys and girls always went with girls.
B:Another reason is that in their religion they can’t interact with girls/boys.
C:They went to a boy/girl school only so they never interacted with each other.
The examples of open-mindness I see every day is boys playing/interacting with girls and people inviting someone from the different sex over to play with them.
The example of narrow-mindedness I see every day is that boys exclude girls and girls exclude boys and also boys teasing girls and girls teasing boys.
The good thing about open-mindness is that when people get older they’ll know how to act around boys/girls and they will get girlfriends/boyfriends. It will also help them in work because they might need to do a project with a boy/girl.
The bad thing about narrow-mindedness is that when people get older it will be harder to get a girlfriend/boyfriend and if they have to do a project when they get older they will act strange around that person.
Open-mindedness can help you learn because you can work with more types of people. It also helps because you can listen to other peoples ideas and you can share your ideas to your group.
narrow-mindedness stops you from learning because you will not listen to other people ideas and you won’t share ideas. Also it stops you from working with other types of people.
Open-mindedness will help me get a successful exhibition because I won’t mind who I work with and I’ll be able to get on with my work.
narrow-mindedness would slow my work down because I would like to work with some one else and I wouldn’t stop wining. Lucky that I am open-mindedness.

  7. Amy
    March 4, 2010 at 5:08 pm

I think that being open-minded means you should be open-minded about the people around you. Let me explain this a little easier, suppose you are all alone in an area were there are no people to work with that are the same gender as you wouldn’t it be ok just to go to a girl or boys station. I think that when you were young maybe like in ey2 you always played with boys and girls because you didn’t care. I think when Open-minded people grow up they will have a good business because they wont care weather there workers are girls or boys. I think that narrow- minded people always have reasons for there ways but I also think they should be confident. Every time when I’m playing at lunch I always see so many narrow- minded people and not as much open-minded, even after school I see the same thing. I think that open-minded people are more fair than narrow-minded people because it sort of shows that they don’t care weather you’re a girl or boy. I am an open-minded person and it has taught me about different people that are really interesting. If someone is narrow-minded I don’t think its fair but I think it’s also sometimes natural and people like that don’t get a chance to learn something new about boys or girls. If I am the same way I am now I think I will have a great exhibit because I don’t only get ideas from girls but a variety from both. If someone is narrow-minded they will probably end up having lots of problems and maybe not doing there work at all or doing all the work.

    • Sujinna

      Hi Amy,
I think your writing is really high qualitied and I really like where you said :” I think when Open-minded people grow up they will have a good business because they wont care weather there workers are girls or boys. I think that narrow- minded people always have reasons for there ways but I also think they should be confident.”

PS. You spelled exhibition wrong, you spelled exhibit

      March 4, 2010 at 5:16 pm

      Hi Amy,

It is true that when you are young you are not as open-minded as when you grow up. Still some people are as open-minded when they’re still children even if they’re already adults.

      Mick

      • Sujinna

I also agree about the ey2 boy and girl sentence because some people are already normal about it.

    • Amy
      March 4, 2010 at 9:09 pm

I talked to my Mom about this matter and she says that when I was young me and my brother were best friends and we did everything together so that is another reason for the way I am. I have gotton used to other boys because of my brother he tells me to add them on my email and then we talk and then we become great friends. But we dont communicate in school only on msn because my friend has a problem with his gang about girls but he still talks to me really nice. He might not seem nice in school but on msn hes really kind and nice to me and has lots of great ideas. We also share our feelings sometimes with each other. I feel complitly normal because we are really close friends, We have been friends for a really long time.

      Sujinna,
I was ment to write exhibit instead of exhibition by the way.

I think that being open-minded means to share and listen to everyone. I think it also means that you can’t just be with your friends all the time but be with different people (and socilaize). It could also mean that you shouldn’t just think foward but think around you (open). People grow up to be opened-minded by sharing ideas, lisenting to people and being with different people. They rarely ever listen or talk and hang out with different people.I think being open minded will make you become a better learner because some people have very good ideas that could help you (your group) be a better group.I think being narrow minded could be something like being stagnent (you never listen or talk to let your group be better). If your open-minded you/your group will be better because you would listen, talk and copoperate. Being narrow minded in the exhibition would be really bad because your group wouldn’t grow unless your group members try hard.

Yeah! sam what do you mean by shouldn’t just think forward but think around you…in some ways i think it means something like (I can’t do it in english so I had to do it in Thai) จะทำอะไรอย่าคิดเกี่ยวกับเราเอง ให้คิดถึงคนที่อยู่รอบข้างตัวเราด้วย

PS. If anyone can explain what I said, please do so

          • March 4, 2010 at 6:23 pm

  9. Sasha
    March 4, 2010 at 5:40 pm

From my opinion I think open-minded means to not just think about yourself but to think about everyone wether they are a boy or a girl, and listen to everyone’s ideas. People grow up to be open-minded by how everyone teaches and how everyone treats them for example you parents, teachers, cousins, uncles, aunties and their friends. I think people some people grow up to be narrow minded because when they were younger maybe people didn’t treat them in a nice way, or they when ever they see someone who is their friend’s they only see them and doesn’t care about other peoples interests and opinions. When you are open-minded it lets people know that you care for them, they know you are a good friend and doesn’t ignore what you have done and doesn’t care about how much effort you put in to that piece of work. When you are narrow-minded no one would want to be your friend because they know that you don’t care what their opinion is, and they only care for themselves.
When you are open-minded you achieve more than someone who is narrow-minded and also when you get older you will be more successful than someone who is narrow-minded.
During the exhibition open-mindedness will help you because you and the other group members will get things done faster, also if you are open-minded it will show that you listen to other people’s ideas and opinions. During the exhibition if you are narrow-minded you will not listen to other people’s ideas and opinions so you might not even get any ideas yourself so you will be stuck with nothing.

I think being open mided means that you lisson to other people and not only your self and also like Mr. Sam said if your a boy and you only work with other boys your not really being open minded. I think people grow up to be narrow minded because there just weird and are to scared to go and set/work with a person of the oppostie sex. I also think that mabey their teachers let them always choose their groups so they chose their best friends instead of the teacher saying “two girls and two boys”. I think people wont like you when your narrow minded because you’ll only be focused on one thing and if your narrow minded by wanting to be with boys all the time if your a boy you will probably be way to scared to get married.

I agree most of the time in classes we were in before teachers just let you choose the groups so people think they can only choose boys if they are a boy, and girls if they are a girl.

You are totally write. But it shoudlnt be the teachers job we should be trying to take responsibility for it. I know if a teacher did it it would be easier.

Open-minded is one of the most important things in the PYP profile. I think that it means that you should share your ideas, listen to everyone’s perspective and actually make something out of them. I think people grow up to be opening minded by their parents and other people/adults who teach them to be that way. I think that people also grow up to be open-minded because how people react to your ideas. Everyday there are people who are open minded and narrow minded. Narrow minded people only want to see what they want to, it’s a bit of a problem because then they won’t learn anything new unless they are interested in it. One of the examples for open-mindedness is that in our class every day we share our ideas by conversation, and when we think it’s a really good idea we add on to it so it could be better, so by doing that we are listening to what they have to say not only what you want them to say. The example for narrow-mindedness is that whenever I look around people only want to say what they think is the best and they don’t think about what other people feel like. This is something that I see very often some people don’t see the big picture they only see a bit of it. Open-mindedness is very effective in life because it helps throughout our lives like our jobs to be successful, it makes us be better as a person and appreciate others and appreciate how we are as a person as well. Narrow open-mindedness has a bad effect in our lives by having us never agreeing with anyone and won’t have a successful job and a life that makes it worth living. Open-mindedness helps us work together as a team as in boys and girls together. It makes us have a different variety of people working together and sharing ideas to get advice back by different people. I think it’s very important to be open-minded to have a successful life. In exhibition if we don’t be open-minded our exhibition will turn out to be a DISASTER! Because you won’t be able to work with each other and will be scared of what others think.

I think that being open minded means that you listen to everybody’s idea even the ones that are not so good. I thnk that most people were brought up like that or some learned it at a international school. I think that most people are narrow minded
because of their culture. I think that being open minded will help you a lot in the future because suppose you are starting a buissness and you take in men and women you will have double the ideas compared to when you only take on people as the same sex as you. I think that being narrow minded can stop you from learning because you always look at what you want your brain to see and never look at the real stuff so you become stagnant. I think that if you are narrow minded during the exhibition they will probably go with the people as the same gender as themselves. This is not a good idea because you will only be getting male/female perspectives but if you are openminded you will get a mixture of ideas and your presentation will be a lot more interesting for your audience.

    • Sujinna
      March 4, 2010 at 5:49 pm

But there is actually not a lot of religions and cultures that don’t allow you to work with the opposite gender. The one I know for now is the Muslim religion

In my opion open minded means sharing, listening to ideas and narrow minded is not acceppting other people’s ideas and opinoins they just don’t care want the way they want.People grow to be open minded by experiences such as there parents, teachers, family members and sometimes friends teaches and shows to be open minded. In buddhism, I think there is like a book that says stuff like share ideas, listen to buddha’s words. And listening to buddha’s words and doing it is actually being a part of being open minded. I would always see in year 1, the boys and actually holding hands and smiling and I think it is one of the reasons thats why some people are ok with the boy girl thing. I think some people become narrow-minded because of when they were young they maybe didn’t get to spend time with alot of people and they can be lonely and shy. I see some people that plays, communicate with others nicely. I also see people who bullies others and not listening to people alot. The good effect of being open minded is have more friends, be sucessful in life, have a wonderful life. Possibly, narrow minded people will not get along as well with people like friends, co-workers(when older). So Narrow minded people should change and know to be a open minded person. It open minded people works with a team, they will get along and work and make the results good.Narrow minded people can make the project not as good because they’re can be soo many passengers. So, for the exibition everybody should be open minded and healthy to do a good job.

Open minded means to see everything in life with a positive attitude and the right perspective. Like I said earlier, people grow up to be like this because they look at everything without hesitation. People can be narrow minded because they hang out only with the boys or their friends like the example between Niphan, Kabir and myself. I dont see narrow or open mindedness everyday but when I do, I try to look towards that type of attitude and it tempts me to be like that example. If people are narrow mindness, it can cost them heavily because they wont know how to interact. I DON’T EXPECT HEAVY WORK FROM THE EXHIBITION because I have a “NEW” group with “NEW” people to work with or I have myself to finish up quicker.

Being open-minded means that you are thinking out of the box. Well I am not sure how you grow to be open minded but it is something to think about. Well my answer is that it just happens I say this because the way you think reflects on you life. Most people wont understand what I am trying to say or will they. What I am trying to say is that your ideas turn into actions and those actions could be good or bad actions and no matter what it reflects on your life. NOW THAT IS WHAT I USALLY WRITE FOR HOMEWORK IT TOOK ME 2 MINUTES AND 30 SECONDS. ALL I DID WAS ANSWER A QUESTION. THAT SHOWS ME AND TELLS ME THAT I AM INPROVING ON MY HOMEWORK SKILLS I THINK??? I think people that grow up narrow minded our selfish and don’t think about others. People can grow up were they are not in control of their life and they do mean things and they don’t care about others. I see open minded when I see someone help someone else. The good thing about being open minded you are kind it is easy to make friends and you have a good life. The bad effects of being narrow-minded is that you are lonely. Being open-minded encourages me to do more. If you are open minded the exhibition will be easy because their will be a lot of hands and the work will be easy…

I think open minded-means to think about people and think bigger. Not only about yourself but think about the people around you. I think some people grow up to be open-minded because maybe they have a younger sister or brother and they always need to be open-minded. I see some people being open-minded every day when they play. A person doesn’t play what they want to do but instead they play what other people want to play. This makes people happy and think that the person is really kind to you because they listen to what you want to play and don’t say anything bad. I think people will like that people so much. I think being open-minded help you to be a better learner because you think big and sometimes when they find other things that is interesting for them that is related to the thing they were doing they will find that information. I think some people grow up to be narrow-minded because maybe they didn’t have a brother or sister and their parents always did what the kids wanted to do. I see someone being narrow-minded at school, they be a bossy person just because the other people doesn’t want to play what they want to play. I think these things are going to make a problem someday. I think people who are narrow minded makes people angry and frustrating because they don’t listen to people at all. I think narrow-minded stop you from learning because you only see what YOU want to see and maybe they never even try to see other things.

I think being open – minded mean is don’t care boy or girl and share ideas or think about other people’s feeling. I think some people have sister or brother and they think sister or brother’s feeling, so they change to open – minded (this is example). I think some people never (or not often) think about other people’s feeling, so they are narrow – minded. Someone help friends and to do something (this is example of open – mindedness). Someone don’t do them job and some people do it. I think open – mindedness makes someone change into positive person. I think narrow – mindedness makes someone change into negative person.

openminded means your mind is open your outside of the box also it means you like to share your ideas and think the way that nother person will feel and see whats going on. I think become a narrow mind person by clutures, family fanally their gangs for example. the age like 17 if they still is narrowminded will be a negative boring boring person. In my school bus is a one boy in secondry if he sit with a girl he will say oh !!!!!!!!!!!!! a girl germ! ew discatising so It a sichuation happening all around the world.a open minded person will have a good life by haveing a good family and friends and a good job.
norrow minded person will have a not surch of life like don’t have a family or good friend and a job. In the exabizion opened minded person will be quite good because they know and preshate them so they will be have good work.

I think open minded means when you see the prespectives of other people. I think people grow open minded because their parents let them do things e.g interact with the other sex. I think people grow narrow minded because their parents don’t let them do stuff. When your open minded when your 17-18 you’ll probly have a girl or boyfriend but when your narrow minded youprobly won’t!

Open-minded is a person that never says no to the introduction of new ideas and that observes new ideas. You don’t have to think like someone, you don’t have to agree with them, just respect them and their beliefs, like you would want the other person respecting you. Being open minded or narrow minded starts all at home by the up bringing of family members. Sharing, caring and learning to respect is where the mind is open to accept new ideas that leads to creativity but just staying within yourself and not interacting with others leads you to become a reserved and a narrow minded person. The most common thing that I see is that when a girl and a boy are talking, they are taken by in the wrong sense (boy friend or girl friend) and then being teased at, this I feel is a narrow minded way of thinking because we are living in a new generation where we have the freedom to be a risk taker and have the choice to be around with people who we are comfortable with. The effective way is always try to have patience and acceptance of all views otherwise the mind is always going to be blocked and then the negative ways of thinking will effect us. I feel life is full of fun and we should explore and face new challenges and the key to it is never feel afraid of making mistakes because we surely do learn from the mistake so that we do not repeat it again but if we do not have enjoyment in learning then you are enclosed in your own world where you will be lost and a boring person to be with. I strongly feel that being open minded is how we have to treat ourselves by being organized and creative to being successful in doing the exhibition project.

    Hey Guys,

I think that being open minded enables you to be a better leaner because then not only do you get more perspectives from different kinds of people (boy, girl. etc.) but you also listen to other peoples ideas. If you are a narrow minded person then you sometimes only think that what they think is right which ends up leading to fights when working in groups. If it is because of you that people end up in fights while working in groups you should try and fix this problem so it doesn’t happen again. This is more commonly known as reflecting which is exactly what you should if you have made a mistake. This allows you to improve until you don’t do the mistake again.
    Just Wondering if
    you reflect
you are sometimes narrow minded (be honest)
you try to fix the problem

    Hi everyone,

As you know I follow your blog and I am really impressed by your comments, replies, questions, struggles. 🙂
This topic seems to have stirred a lot of thinking (judging by the number of replies) and that in itself is a sign that it is not only an interest you have but also an issue in your larger community.
I agree with the many perspectives you share here but I would like to isolate a comment that made me ponder.
One of you has used the word “spy” in the reply…and that was rather disturbing. Let’s assume other 6th graders do read your blog. What if those students are shy – and they don’t comment because they cannot spell very well or do not find the proper words to say what they think? What if there is a lot of peer pressure from the side of their classmates? (more specifically, their classmates would turn against them for reading YOUR blog) What if they simply do not wish to comment? Is that a crime? Since you are talking about open-mindedness…shouldn’t you be the ones who allow people to make their own choices?…
Besides, if this was true – that is, some of other kids do read your blog – what would the “hard bitter lesson” be?…
True leaders need not advertise for their skills…the same way beautiful people do not need to speak about their beauty. It is obvious- everyone can notice it (may it be beauty, honesty, intelligence etc). In other words, about your blog, you DO have the right to be proud – it is your success, your work, your effort- BUT not at the expense of humiliating others, don’t you think?…

I am looking forward to your reactions (I might have sounded a bit critical…but we were talking about being OPEN-minded 🙂 so I am practicing that!)
Cheers and keep up the good work!
